I’m 44 and need to lose an additional 35 lbs to move from obese to overweight.

I HATE any kind of exercise that isn’t fun for me. And if I hate it, I won’t do it, no matter how good it’s supposed to be for me.

So, I had to rule out Biggest Loser, 8 Minute anything, and any DVD that’s “hardcore” and “produces amazing results.”

Surprisingly, I LOVE the Leslie Sanson walking videos (Walk Away the Pounds) when I can’t get any other exercise.

But what’s made the biggest difference for me is playing games on Wii Fit Plus and shooting baskets for 10 – 30 minutes in the school gym (right across the hall from my music classroom).

Oh, and a free way to preview DVDs is to go to you tube and put in the name of anything you’re considering. There’s a lot on there. Today I tried “Ballet Boot Camp” because I want to start dancing again once I am only “overweight.”

Goodness, I had a point. Oh yes, find what YOU love and do what you can when you can.

Glad it helped, I liked collagevideo because it helped me avoid certain DVD’s that after watching for 1 minute knew just weren’t for me!

I don’t like a lot of chatter especially if I do it often and some of the older women (35-up) tend to do that less.

I bought the pilates gym from HSN but it’s also on Amazon…great piece, no putting together and it really gives a great workout at many levels. Even my son uses it sometimes.
If they let me give a link. I thought for the money, I paid around 300, it gave a great workout and you can "grow with it’ since it has different levels and the base can go to different angles.

I totally agree! Gilad’s Body Sculpt is the BEST! Good warm-ups, exercises for every part of your body and what I really like is he focuses on form and explains exactly what you should be doing to avoid injury and get the most out of the workout. It’s just good, classic exercising that really works.

I’ve been doing his Body Sculpt for almost two years now, 4 days a week. (just be sure you get “Body Sculpt” and not “Bodies in Motion” - the latter is aerobics from the 80’s and you have to put up with watching 80’s hair and leg warmers for 30 minutes and some hokey props once in awhile. :))
I actually just ordered some of his older DVDs off Amazon and my DH and I have been doing them in the mornings. They were both made in the 80s so there is the leotard/belt/high socks combo. But the workouts are kicking my patootie. One is a 45 minute cardio (aerobics) and the other is a 45 minute toning that is more intense than Total Body Sculpt. The other DVD is an hour long and it’s got some cardio and some weights/toning. We haven’t tried that one yet.

I love Gilad. I love his workouts and I love his encouragement. I haven’t found any other DVD workout I like as much but I do enjoy my Windsor Pilates DVDs, too.

Spring for P90X. I began P90X when I was 50 and pretty well out of shape. I did what I could do, slowly, and could not believe how fast I got into shape and how great I felt. I lost weight, too. It’s kind of pricey, but not when you consider that you won’t need any other exercise DVDs once you get your P90X set. It has everything. My favorite is the X Stretch. Yes, P90X is hyped, but I’m glad that didn’t keep me from buying it. I’ll never buy another exercise DVD. Just go slowly.

I did P90X 2 and a half times before switching to a pure weight-lifting program. I lost 30 lbs within the first three months of P90X, most of it being lost within the first month. However, it is really time consuming if you actually do the diet and follow everything by the book. If you are really out of shape, I would suggest doing Power 90 before doing P90X. These are tough programs but the great thing about them is that you are guaranteed to see great results if you follow them by the book.

Edit: Also, look in your local classifieds for the DVD’s (kijiji, craigslist, newspaper) as many people either receive the program as a gift or start it and give up and therefore sell the set really cheap (I got a brand new package, still sealed, for $30 on kijiji, vs a brand new cost of $130 plus tax). Also, exercise is only half the battle. Too many people neglect diet. Toss all the junk, processed foods, etc. Get food as close to its natural source as you can (ie. plain chicken breast instead of chicken fingers, fresh fish instead of processed, eggs, 1% or skim milk, whole grains instead of white). Eat protein and veggies with every meal, and keep carbs to only after a workout. Don’t eat anything other than veggies or lean proteins such as tofu 3 hours before bed. And you’ve heard it a million times, but drink water all the time! A gallon a day is what you need if you are working out. Also, make sure to sip the water throughout the day and not gulp it down in large amounts.

I have to admit, when my P90X arrived, I leafed through the diet book, decided that my diet pretty much matched what the author recommended, and parked the diet book on my bookshelf. I didn’t follow the P90X diet, I just did the exercise routines. I didn’t get the most awesome results I could have, but I’m leaned up (goodbye, flab) and I feel 20 years younger. The exercise routines were enough for me to take on. My normal eating patterns don’t include processed foods, anyway, so that’s something to consider.

P.S. A cheap, simple change that will help you lose weight and be healthy: every time you want a snack, eat an apple just the way it came off the tree.

I used to teach Spinning, and I love the Spinervals workouts. They’re done on real bikes on trainers, but you could use a Spinning bike instead. The instructor is fun and challenges you, but there’s none of that annoying “Rah Rah!” stuff. Here’s a link spinervals.com/?gclid=CLSnoqik5q4CFcMQNAodq2YHaA

You can find a huge variety of exercise DVDs at Collage Video. Most of them are rated by customers and if you call the 800 number, the operators have done most of the videos and can answer questions. Here’s a link: collagevideo.com/

I really like The Firm videos. Some are pretty cheesy from the 80’s but they’re effective. They combine weight training and cardio so you burn calories faster. I used them to get back in shape after having kids.
