Help making sacrifices so DW can be SAHM

Can this be done?

In my mind it can. It would require selling a car (becoming a one car family), living in a 2 bedroom apartment or condo which would mean kids sharing a room and not having any space (compared to a house right now), being very tight on the grocery budget, never eating out, etc.

The good news is a postdoc will only last at most 3 years before I can get a real job. And each year there is a raise so I will be making a little more each year. Does this sound reasonable?
It sounds like you have all your ducks in a row!! 👍 I don’t think I could possibly give you any more advice, you hardly seem like you really need it. 😉

Tally, you and your DW are doing such a great thing for your family. I loved having my mom at home all the time, sharing a room with my little sister, and looking forward to running up to my dad when he finally came home from work.

Oh! And the photo of your little ones is just precious.

For anybody reading my post to the OP and his response. Can you help with something? Was what I said really so awful? DId I say it in a rude way? SHould I have not said anything?
Yes to all fo the above:)

The passive agressive posts especially on the parenting/family boards is getting a little ridiculous. The OP was brave to ask advice here if you ask me.It’s so sad the so many people have to justify their own life choices by belittling others…but it’s common place here now. It’s why I read, but rarely post.

To the OP…You are going to do fine:) I won’t bore you to tears with my financial ups and downs, but most of us go through them, and we come out the other side. Remember, these years especially when the kids are little go by SO fast. Someday you will look back fondly on having no cable:) . You have the right idea; married life is a sacrifice. You’ll do well:)

On the subject of groceries…Has anyone seen the show Jon and Kate plus 8? They have twins and sextuplets, and Kate(mom) says her grocery bill averages $150.00 week. 🤷 Does anyone know how she does that for 10 people? Does she have a website giving shopping tips? I’d love to know how she does that…

I am not asking because of this particular person only. I am asking so I can grow to be a better perspn.

Thanks.
Rule of thumb…

if you wouldn’t say it to the persons face, don’t say it in cyberspace.

Wow!! My first thought was, “They must eat a lot of soups or rice and beans.” 😃 Honestly, though, I have no idea, but it would be nice to know, wouldn’t it? That’s amazing.

I think I fell off the couch when she said 150 a week. I spend about 130/week for myself and 3 kids. I cook from scratch always and the kids make their own lunches with no snacky stuff like chips etc…just basics. I do however, try to buy a lot of veggies and stuff that is healthier (no soda or wonder bread will ever see the inside of my kitchen), so that does tend to add up. If Kate wants to make some extra money for all those college funds, she should write a book about grocery shopping!

Hey, I don’t have much experience with this, but I’ll be praying for you guys!

Well I would ave said exactly that in person. But you are right I might have been a little more careful in the way I couched what I said.

all is forgiven through PM, we both realize that there were better ways to ask this question and betters ways to answer this question. Thanks to all the advice here, I believe we are on the right track and will continue to look up to those who lead simpler yet holier lives.

One way to keep grocery costs down (besides moving to Mississippi if they finally get rid of grocery tax 👍 😃 🙂 ) would to maybe start a small vegetable garden where you end up living. They can be very cost saving especially if you do research on hardy plants that need little upkeep.

Also, as for your wife hating change. It’s probably best to borrow books from the library that get into frugal living topics. Bookmark Frugal websites and blogs for her and encourage her to look into it. It will be so much easier for her if she gets excited about it herself (with a set plan and knowledge of how things are going to work out) and knowing that you’ll be a source of strength and support in this sort of lifestyle :D.

At the end of two years, you’ll probably look back and think “Gee, I can’t believe we lived more expensively than we do now!” 🙂

I agree it is exciting to meet up with a challenge that has so much immediate gratification. Reading about the frugal ways can be very inspiring. I am such a granola person now it is almost sickening, but I love it.

It is also very chique to be an environmentalist which includes simpler living!!! SO if anyone complains about newly developed frugal habits one can always respond with: “Well its all about Global Warming you know…” Don’t mention the ocean heating up and giving off the majority of the CO2 though !!
