## A lot depends on whether by “total” one means:
- Man is depraved in all his faculties, person, nature
or
- Man is completely and totally depraved in those things
1 is “extensive” depravity - he is wounded in the whole number of his constitutive elements and parts, though not so completely as to become wholly incapable of all good
2 is “intensive” depravity - he is wounded in all of these parts, in their whole extent.
Or is it the other way about ?
St. Paul does speak somewhere of being “dead in sins” - and he was talking of the state preceding justification.
As to the quotation - I don’t think it can be pressed, not beyond a certain point: because otherwise, one is going to deny the badness of the devil. Just a thought.

I have run a simple test among my Calvinist believing friends and so far it has turned out the same way in every case. I simply ask them if they believe that “man is basically good” or that “man is basically evil.” So far every one that I have asked has indicated that man is “basically evil.” The teaching of total depravity inevitably leads these people to this conclusion. While man is severely wounded by “the fall” he is still basically good, and scripture says so. Here are some verses to illustrate the point.
IS MAN BASICALLY EVIL?
WHERE THE BIBLE SAYS NO:

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
