Help me biblically explain the intercession of Saints.

I know that we, as Catholics, pray to Saints to ask them to intervene to God on our behalf. I regularly pray to Saints. Recently, mentioned to Protestant friend that I needed to pray to Saint Anthony to help me find something I had lost. He asked, “Where does it talk about Saints in the Bible?” I was unable to answer his questions. I know why we pray to saints. I know how a person becomes a saint. What I don’t know is where or why did this practice begin?
