Hello,

I have been to all of the parishes immediately around me and have not seen a holy water font that is big enough for me to fill up even a small bottle of Holy Water. Also, I am not really too close to the priest at my local parish that I attend so I would feel awkward approaching him especially as a new Catholic until I get a little more active in the parish. And, I don’t really have a car so I can’t get around that easily to the parish during the week and not on Sunday.

So, my question is, is there a way to get holy water without going to a parish and talking to the priest? Also, could anyone on here help me get some holy water like send me a small bottle if you have extra laying around the house? Just wondering.

God bless!

You can approach a priest at any time. There is no reason to feel awkward. You don’t have to be active in the parish to walk up to a priest and ask him for a moment of his time, for a blessing, to hear your confession…

Just walk right up and say, “Father, can you bless this water so that I can have some holy water?” It only takes about five or four seconds for him to do it.

Bring the bottle of water to Mass and ask him to bless as he greets people after Mass.

You do not have to go to the parish priest, just ask one in the parish office or one of the ushers, if a sunday mass.

And do not be shy asking the parish priest, he will be most glad to help you.

My suggestion is to call the parish offices and explain to them your situation.

They have volunteers who bring the Eucharist to the homebound, to those in hospitals, and what not. Someone could probably swing by and bring you a bottle.

Call the parish office, it might not be in an obvious place. In a couple of the parishes I attend, there is a separate container of holy water in the chapel or the rear of the church. It’s like a big jug with a spigot so you can fill up an container. Barring that, you can bring a Mason jar to church and have Father bless it afterward.

Okay thank you all for your suggestions.

Until I am able to make it to my local parish, does anyone have any extra Holy Water that they would be willing to send my way? If not, that is okay and I can wait two or so weeks for it.

Blessings!

I second calling the office to find out what is the usual procedure at your parish.

Many parishes I know of have a container with a spigot. But if the parish has had problems with break-ins or vandalism, the container might be in a locked room such as a sacristy or baptistry.

Also, parishes which have full immersion baptismal pools often expect that you will just fill your bottle from the pool.

So, can I just fill a bottle or two from the baptismal at the back of the parish? I am pretty sure it has running water.

I am not sure what you mean by “the baptismal”.

If you mean a LARGE pool of water that is designed for adults to walk into in order to be baptized that is usually OK. It will typically have some sort of fountain mechanism to circulate the water.

If you are talking about a small stand-a-lone basin, then probably no.

If you are talking about something that looks like a jug (usually made of ceramic or metal and probably holds 5-15 gallons) which has a spigot/faucet and might be labeled “Holy Water”, then yes.

If you are talking about something that looks like regular plumbing then, unless it is labeled as Holy Water, it probably is not Holy Water.

I am talking about the baptismal font at the back of the church. Not walk-in but it is the same one used for infant baptism just I’m pretty sure it has running water.

Call the church office and ask where to get holy water from. I do take mine from the large baptismal font/hot tub in the middle of the church. But don’t assume that’s OK, call to be sure.

I wouldn’t take it from there.
I’m not sure why not? 🤷

Yes, the font in the back of the church normally has holy water in it and that is where I would get water. Some fonts may have a pump which would make it look like it is running.

Our previous parish has something like that, and that is what we used to bless ourselves when we entered and exited the church.

Our current parish doesn’t have a pump and only has a little water in it. And it is much smaller.

We do have a large container with a spout near the Sacristy. You would be able to fill a large container.

We have the same thing in our parish, and I always fill up my Holy Water bottles from the font. They bless it at the Easter Vigil and it continually runs through into a pool and out again.

Just fill a bottle from your water tap at home and take to the priest to get it blessed. Nothing complicated there.

If the small basin was part of a fountain system that is fine.

But if it is just a basin (even if it is hooked up to the local water supply) I would not do so because I think it’s improper to take the water that is designated for people to bless themselves. There might not be a priest available to bless more water.

Landon, if you end up having to ask a priest to bless water for you, bring some salt to have him bless. Might as well. 🤷

Does a holy water container need to be blessed?
