My family, my sisters and parents as well as dh and dd, know of a young man since he was 18 years old, now 20 years. He was in the special eds. program with my nephew. This young man has severe learning disabilities and just regular activities of daily of living problem. His mother has to be mentally ill because she rather buy jewelry with her paycheck than feed the family. She has a minor as well at home. They are being evicted for the third time since we known him. His mother doesn’t pay the rent in the apartments. We have helped them in the past by buying bags of food and this mother just buys jewelry. We got this young man on SSI and she allowed it to expire when they asked for renewal paperwork. The young man wants to move in with my sister but she has her son and girlfriend there and can’t afford anyone else.

This young man needs a permanent situation. He doesn’t know how to shower or other basic things like that. When he was in grade school, the teachers told the mother he was real behind and she ignored all the request for meetings due to her working. She use to live with a man who is an illegal immigrant and keeps getting caught and returns again. He is a drunk and that is where this young man is going to live with his dad but he told him that he will be having prostitutes over anytime. She is just a bad dad just like the mother. The young man has attempted to work but can’t due to limited understanding of what he is to do. He is more like a six-year-old. There has to be places to live for people with these limitations? Can anyone help me help him? I don’t think he should stay with his mother, who he is going back to whenever she finds a place again. She only uses his strength to move things around and doesn’t care if he eats. She doesn’t want him to move with anyone else. He is so so depressed! His dad gave him a xbox and he is very good with the games. She took it and pawned it for jewelry money. Then the dad gave him another one and I gave him an Ipad to help him learn and he downloaded free reading programs. She is now telling him she wants his xbox and ipad since he is complaining that she should have bought food instead of jewelry. He called my nephew and begged him to come and pick up his things to hide from his mother and also to find good homes for their two dogs. These dogs have had no veterinarian care and only have milk as their food. It is a sad situation, but we have tried helping the mother and she just doesn’t want it. She turned her back on us when she joined the Jehova’s Witness. They told her Catholics are bad people.

I need to get this young man on his own so we can help him get SSI and food stamps and a place to live. He feels so useless. He has a facebook account and I am friends with him and one time he made a comment how God hates him as his mother told him because he is just too stupid. It was sad to read. HELP.

Any advice?

Call adult protective services, for a start. I see you’re in Orlando…I’m assuming Orlando, Florida? Here’s the contact info:

myflfamilies.com/service-programs/adult-protective-services

They need to get a social worker on his case so they can get his SSDI reinstated and find a living situation that’s better for him. They could also work with Florida’s Department of Vocational Rehabilitation to find job training for him so he would have someplace to go daily, and something to do.

I’ll pray for him, and you. It’s good that he has you in his corner.

Yes, contact these people. He is being abused by his mother, and they need to get him out of there soonest.

Goodwill Easter Seal (the office, not the store) is a resource for people with disabilities of all kinds, mental, physical, developmental. In the area I used to live, they had programs of all kinds for people with disabilities. They could offer a needs assessment and referrals to the appropriate community resources.

Goodwill often is involved with work specifically for people with disabilities. They work with autism, Aspergers, all kinds of conditions.

There are group homes for people who can’t live alone. He may qualify. Since that is their area, they may be able to do a referral.

You need to hotline this one. Call them and tell them everything you know and they will investigate. There are living situations for adults with disabilities but they are often very expensive. I would turn this over to the authorities in your state. They can assess what this young man needs and get him on some kind of path.

If I reached a point where I flat out didn’t know where to start, I’d probably call up the United Way, explain the situation, ask for advice.

Does Medicaid pay for a group home arrangement?
Not generally unless the person needs nursing care, and then it’s usually a nursing home, unless they are fortunate enough to live in an area that has a specialized facility for adults with disabilities who are not elderly.
