Help me identify the letter about Protestants

Some time ago I came accross a document on the Vatican website written by the Pope before he became Pope. He said that Protestants have very serious obstacles to salvation because they don’t have the Sacraments. I can’t locate this anymore, I’ve forgotten the name of it. Can anyone help me locate it? Please help, I need it badly. Thanks!

I think you are talking about Dominus Iesus. But please read the relevant portions carefully. This document has often been misinterpreted.

Thank you for your helpful info. I am trying to relate this to abortion. Catholics can receive absolution from abortion in the Sacrament of Confession. How do Protestants gain forgiveness?

As I understand Catholic theology, any sin can be forgiven if the person has perfect contrition (and this assumes that they will go to confession as soon as possible if they understand that it is necessary).
