Help me pick a charity

I am not sure if this is in the right forum but here goes.

I am trying to pick a worthwhile charity to donate to and need some help. It does not necessarily have to be a Catholic charity. I want the money to goto people in need, mostly food for the poor. Not the American poor but the truly poor and starving around the world. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
 
I’d suggest the Missionaries of Charity. They are in over 100 countries around the world and work with “the poorest of the poor”. They work hard and waste no money. One thing you said “not the American poor but the truely poor and starving around the world” - you would be surprised, you could find the truely poor and starving on your doorstep.🙂
 
I like St. Judes childrens hospital. I have a soft spot for children with cancers and they don’t refuse anyone. Tim
 
How about Food For The Poor? It’s a real charity. It’s Catholic based, but helps everybody. I know a priest heavily involved with their work, refurbishes computers for them.

How about the Heifer Project? Instead of feeding a person for a day, you can give a person the start of a herd or flock that will feed them for some time to come.

How about Share Our Strength? I think the bake sale thing is kind of hokey, and I think their factoids are off-base, but they are popular, and they are trying.

How about Maryknoll Missions? They go all over the world, and one of the things they do is feed hungry people.

How about Second Harvest? They are local, but they are at least nationwide.

I would suggest either World Vision or Catholic Relief Services(CRS). My youth group has done “food fasts” in the past and sent the money to these two charities, so I know that they both help to feed the poor throughout the world.

Or the Catholic Extension Society.
The Catholic Church Extension Society exists to sustain and extend the Catholic Faith in poor and remote mission areas of the United States where diocesan resources are insufficient. All of the above suggestions seem to be fine. If you decide to go out of the religious sector however, check the charity thoroughly. A lot of them have unadvertised ties to other organizations. For instance, in this country, if you donate to the United Way some of your coin will go to Planned Parenthood. Even Girl Scouts is connected to Planned Parenthood. I would not be a bit surprised if some of the secular charities for overseas needy have some type of “family planning” component.

As a forum group, we should all get together and make a list of what charities have verifiable ties to such organizations and post it.

Just a thought.

  1. accepts children from around the world with catastrophic diseases
  2. provides free medical care to all those in need
  3. provides, food, housing, transportation, medical supplies
  4. funds research to help save children’s lives and advance cures for many cancers
  5. does not do embryonic type stem cell research
We spent 8 months there saving our son from brain cancer. He is doing well now and will be monitored for 10 more years - free. A very worthy cause indeed.

I remember 5 years ago I went to a talk by Fr. Benedict Groeschel for the first time. It was the first time I really heard what he had to say in person (we didn’t have EWTN TV or radio at the time), and I was blown away. As you can see by my signature, he’s one of the top influences in my life.

Anyways, the very next day, I was at my parent’s house. Since they give to their Catholic chairatable organizations, they have been put on the list of many other Catholic organizations. Of course, they can’t give to everyone, so many things end up in the junk mail pile. I happened to notice Fr. Groeschel’s picture on one of them, so I immediately snatched it up. It was for Good Counsel Homes goodcounselhomes.org/ for unwed mothers who have decided not to abort their babies.
I saw this as a sign from God, so I regularly contribute to them. Now of course, I’ve been put on mailing lists for a bunch more charities!

I wish I could give more than I do, but I look for signs from God like this to tell me who to give to.
