I was told by a friend that Jesus would be in favor of embryonic stem cell research, with the thinking being that we are ‘wasting’ these embryos and now they might be able to save a life.
Please, I don’t know scripture nearly as well as everyone here…can anyone tell me a chapter and verse (and which version of the bible you are using) where Jesus says something which would show his opposition to such a thing.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

I dont think this question can be answered with just “chapter and verse”. One needs to see not only Scripture but also the constant teaching of the Church which has always defended the unborn (contrary to what so-called catholics like Pelosi might say). For starters here is a chapter and verse:

“You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, so wonderfully you made me; wonderful are your works! My very self you knew” (Psalm 139:13-14 NAB)

I emphasize this is only a starting point.

To this I will add:

“Thou shalt not kill”

Thanks you guys!
I was figuring there was nothing so easy as Jesus said ‘Leave the embryos alone’ but I thought I should put forth an effort 🙂

Embryonic stem cell research typically kills the embryonic human being involved. “And Jesus said, ‘You shall not kill…’” (Matthew 19:18)

Others here help please on the exact quotes but I remember some reference to the least of my people…

More importantly can these people give any example where God / Jesus approves of the murder of an innocent human for the good of another?

I think that Jesus would be in favor. The stem cells used in this research are typically left over from fertilization clinics and are about to be destroyed. So the question becomes, would Jesus rather:

a) allow the embryo to be destroyed

b) use these embryos, instead of destroying them, to increase the quality of life for God’s children

Not every situation is black and white. In this case, I think Jesus would clearly prefer option B. That is the logical, rational, and moral option.

So you think Jesus would have been in favor of the Nazis performing scientific experiments on Jews in concentration camps? After all, the Nazis were going to kill them anyway. 🤷

When Jesus said, “Thou shalt not kill,” He did NOT say, “…unless it benefits the life of another.” He said, “Thou shalt not kill.” Period.

Also, your argument is fallacious because there is no proof that embryonic stem cells are or will be in any way beneficial. As of yet, there have been no cures derived from embryonic stem cell research. (source) Adult stem cells are much more promising and morally licit.

To the OP: I would ask these people to prove that they have the authority to speak for Jesus. As far as I know, the only person alive who has the authority to speak for God is the Pope, since he is the successor of Peter.

If we were following the teachings and examples in the bible we wouldn’t even need to have this discussion. Creating human life outside of normal physical relations is a disordered attempt to play God. So, the very creation of the embryos in question is something that Jesus would be opposed to.

Why do I say that the act of making these embryos is disordered? Because it is an ultimately selfish act. One doesn’t want to get married and make a baby? Borrow some sperm and make one in a test tube! Can’t get pregnant with your husband? Don’t pray like the parents of John and Samuel. Make one in a test tube! These are selfish acts. The first far more so than the second.

That is probably the worst and most atrocious analogy I’ve seen in my entire lifetime.

That is a blatant lie. There is so much evidence for this research. For example, Embryonic Stem Cells Reduce Parkinson’s Symptoms In Monkeys futurepundit.com/archives/002561.html

The scientific community, Harvard, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Barack Obama, and John McCain all assert that there is huge potential. Since I’m not a geneticist, I’m relying on the scientists who study this to decide where the potential lies.
As of yet, there have been no cures derived from embryonic stem cell research.
Probably because there is a ban on it and lack of funding.

To the OP: I would ask that you personally weigh the issue and pray to Jesus. Ask him if he would prefer that these embryonic stem cells are wasted or used to better God’s children.

I think that Jesus would be in favor.

You can think it all you want, it’s won’t make it true. Teaching it as you seem to be doing here is heretical, if you full understand what your doing.

The stem cells used in this research are typically left over from fertilization clinics and are about to be destroyed.
Many people would be willing to adopt those children so they don’t have to be killed.

So the question becomes, would Jesus rather:

a) allow the embryo to be destroyed

b) use these embryos, instead of destroying them, to increase the quality of life for God’s children.

Using your analogy then when the police confiscate illegal drugs, It’s better to give them to people to be taken to alter there minds that to have them destroyed.

Not every situation is black and white. In the eyes of God it is, your either doing his will or your not. In this case, I think Jesus would clearly prefer option B. That is the logical, rational, and moral option.
Not a chance. What is logical, rational and moral to you doesn’t make it logical, ractional and moral for the Son of God. Get a grip!!!

How so? Same situation. The Nazis passed laws saying that Jews weren’t human; America (specifically, the Democrats) are trying to pass laws that say that the unborn aren’t humans.

Having symptoms reduced in primates is not at all the same as a cure. In the meantime, look at the link I provided. Adult stem cells are already providing ***cures ***for human beings.

Yet you can assert what Jesus Christ thinks about them. Uh huh. Furthermore, McCain used to support ESCR but now contends that adult stem cells have much more promise. See here.

Good! I’m glad there is a ban on killing innocent human beings for medical research.

Because Jesus is all for sacrificing innocent human children. 👍

I don’t think you understand the issue. They’re not using cells that are still viable or ones that can be adopted. They’re intercepting cells that are expired and about to be destroyed. It is a binary decision: the cell is destroyed OR it can be used in research.
b) use these embryos, instead of destroying them, to increase the quality of life for God’s children.

No, you are incorrect with my analogy. In your example, there is harm caused to the person taking the drug instead of destroying the drug, whereas in my example, life is enhanced by the cell instead of destroying the cell.

It is true that adult stem cells are providing some cures. However, adult stem cells are limited in what they can do.
Good! I’m glad there is a ban on killing innocent human beings for medical research.
No human being is being killed - You mis-understand the science. If you can show me evidence that an organ growing on a lab dish is really growing into a person instead, then I will agree with you.

But they’re making more breakthroughs every day, especially on umbilical cord stem cells and fat stem cells.

No such cures have yet been derived from embryonic stem cells.

If the baby in the lab dish is not a human being, why is IVF a viable procedure? If it wasn’t a human being, it wouldn’t be able to grow into one no matter where it was implanted.

Life begins at conception. Any human embryology textbook will tell you so.

First, I think that one should never try to read the mind of God.

Secondly, God is pro-life. The Catholic Church teaches that it is wrong to kill people to experiment on them. It does not matter how many other lives might be saved. One cannot justify the murder of an innocent person so that others might, in some remote science-fiction-like alternate reality, be helped in some way.
