In confession, my penance was to do the following for a week:
Write on one side of a piece of paper every sin I commit. On the other side write every good deed I do. In the past I have been rather selfish and havent done many good deeds and I need some help thinking of some that I can do. Any suggestions?

Hundreds of things…
Give to charity
Visit the lonely
Feed the hungry
Give clothes to the naked
Give your time to a volunteer service
Pray a daily Rosary for the suffering

Any time you see a situation where you can do some good, you should jump to it, for the greater glory of God.

pray for the souls in Purgatory
give money to beggers
give to charity
feed stray animals and wild birds
run errands for older people
give presents
be kind

hope this helps.Theres lots more-do anything you can think of!

Become an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Volunteer a Saturday working for Habitat for Humanity.
Help in the local soup kitchen, no matter who operates it.
Offer to help the next person you see stalled on the side of the road.

Most of all, pray that the Holy Spirit will open your eyes and your heart so that you can see the needs of others.

Click on some free donation sites. Have you heard of those?

Walk with your eyes open for what needs doing, and do it. It doesn’t have to be anything grand or inspiring – little things, like holding doors or emptying the lint tray when you’re done with the dryer to make it easier for the next person, are still good, and over time little goods become great.

Very good suggestion - pray to the Holy Spirit to guide you to those in need and keep your eyes open.

Help someone in the grocery store.
Pray for your neighbor who has an unruly child.
Say a Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet for world peace.
Encourage your pastor by expressing your appreciation for his work.
Invite somene whom you know to be lonely or hurting to have coffee with you (you do not need to pry or ask questions - that person may open up to you - and you can offer comfort - refrain from advising).
Visit a nursing home (if you ask at the reception desk, they will direct you to someone who gets no visitors - no explanations are usually needed to the person you are visiting).
Offer to guide a Rosary at a nursing home for Catholic residents.
Smile at that unfriendly neighbor. If you see that person in some kind of difficulty (such as trying to take groceries in) offer to help.
Talk to the person that sits next to you at Mass every Sunday and whom you don’t know.
Share your time/talents at your parish.
Volunteer to become an ESL teacher.
Become a Rosary Maker and send the rosaries to missionaries around the world.
Pick up papers/trash that you see on the sidewalk, parking lot.
Let someone into your lane that is waiting to get into the flow of traffic.
Pray for that impatient driver ahead/behind/next to you.

The list goes on and on. Keep your eyes open and your mind on the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Pretty soon your good deeds will exceed your sins many-fold! And when we are doing good deeds it is harder to be sinning. Because we have our eyes on the Lord and others - and not on ourselves.

give me a foot massage (okay, someone’s you know, then.)
Do some extra housework or cooking for a friend.
take someone out for some fun
drive them to church

Maybe the point of the penance was to see the comparison between the sins and the good deeds as the OP usually lives his life, not to think of new good deeds and do them. It’s kind of like the food journal a new dieter keeps before he begins to show the dietician what his habits are. It’s no help to the process for the potential dieter to suddenly switch to grilled chicken and steamed veggies for the period of time he records his food intake - how will the dietician know his weaknesses and how to overcome them? Same thing with the good deeds vs. sins. Just a possibility here.

A great book for everyone to read is Father Lovasik’s The Hidden Power of Kindness. I have read it through twice and intend on re-reading it again this summer. It makes me more aware of the little things that I can do everyday to bring Christ to the world!

Say “thank you” to the person who is checking you out at the grocery or any other store.

Leave a larger tip for the waiter

Drive with courtesy

Hold doors open for people

There are others, but I’m finding that I’m noticing what used to be ordinary courtesy since it’s becoming rarer nowadays.

Drop a coin somewhere for somebody to pick up.🙂

I put some coins in a newspaper box slot once when I saw a homeless person who was checking all the slots for spare change. It felt good!

Random Acts of kindness…one at a time, will change the world!

You know in your heart what to do…it’s getting started that’s the hard part. Pray for the wisdom to know how.
