Other than a preference for pre-vatII practices, how does it differ in the world view?

What about your beliefs makes you stand out from the typical Catholic who also tries to be faithful to the Magisterium?

Particularly…how does a “traditionalist” view

-NFP
-Politics
-Parental responsibility
-Marriage
-Feminism
-Sex in general
-Entertainment
-Other religions
-Gender roles
-Fashion
-Money

I am asking…because I often find myself disagreeing with my fellow “normal” Catholics and wonder if I am starting to become more traditional and should seek out traditionalists as friends.

A traditionalist seeks to be faithful to the Church and remember the teachings of the Church. So they do not see a discontinuity with the past but a treasure of faith that is timeless. As everyone can do what they want this will be done to various degrees.

I do not attend the older Mass but I see myself as a traditionalist as truth does not change and our faith has such a beautiful continuity that if we seek to be humble and serve Christ we will follow rather than try and reinvent it to our own image. A good start is to read a Catechism on Pascendi.

There are many caricatures of traditionalists but you will mostly find people who seek to be faithful to the Church and not fashion.

I agree.

Particularly…how does a “traditionalist” view

-NFP - Typically opposed
-Politics - Typically not-Democrat (ranging from libertarian to conservative)
-Parental responsibility Implied! Parents need to take responsibility for their children.
-Marriage Happens only once. It’s forever, until you die.
-Feminism It exists, and has corrupted our women.
-Sex in general For those who are married
-Entertainment Should be holy, and helpful, entertainment
-Other religions People who need saving - just like the Catholic Church views them
-Gender roles Every gender has its role.
-Fashion **rofl **
-Money They could use a bit more as they raise their fleet of children

The questions you asked necessarily aren’t related to traditionalism. My post above, though, tells you how tradCaths view the world differently. 🙂

PM if any questions.

I think you’re better off reading the encyclicals that the Church has about a lot of these issues. Some of them aren’t as pertinent-- for instance I don’t think there’s an official church teaching about entertainment, but obviously there are some forms of “entertainment” that shouldn’t be engaged in, for instance “ghost-hunting.” The Catechism would also provide a lot of this information too.

When you say traditional, are you talking about anti-Vatican II or people who are faithful to the Magisterium? People who are anti-VII consider them selves traditional, but are in opposition to the Church at the same time.

I don’t mean a splinter group.

To be honest I don’t even fit well with traditionalists. I don’t think they would like me.

But I also don’t fit that well with the typical Catholic anymore either, because I very VERY strongly believe that Catholics need to return to a more traditional lifestyle in order to change the culture back into one that supports life.

So I feel a bit out of place in both camps, because I am not a full-out traditionalist but more traditional than the typical CAF Catholic.

You are orthodox, a good place to be 🙂

I’m in a similar position as you, although traditionalist think I’m a little off too. I think it’s difficult in todays church because we have two opposing “camps” (I don’t like to use traditionalist because to be Catholic is to be traditional) conservatives and liberals(even though I hate using those terms, they’re what everyone understands) To me it seems like these two “camps” stay on one side of the ship(the church) instead of enjoying the entire ship(church). my motto is I want to accept all the church accepts nothing more nothing less.

In my personal experience(might be different for others)…(and I’m not speaking of anyone here, just personal encounters)To me the liberals seem to have a big heart but they’re heterodox, the conservatives have the truth but seem to have no heart. To have the truth means not just doctrinally, but having the truth(which is Jesus)in our heart. because truth presented without love is just as dangerous as love psudeolove presented without truth. As Catholics we are supposed to be orthodox no matter what our personal liturgical preferences are. We can not reject VCII nor can we interpret VCII as a break from tradition.

me personally, I love the EF, and I love the OF(my favorite is the Divine Liturgy but I don’t have one in my area…but that’s just my “preference”) but I also believe in having an openness to the charisms or 1 Cor 12 as the catechism, popes recommend

The people who I know, that have the most in common because they’re traditional are what people would call “conservatives” and people who are called “charismatics” the ones I know love the Pope, the churches teachings, traditions etc

I attend the EF mostly, believe in traditional roles (as in gender) and follow the church teachings. There are traditionalists who are very fanatical and say the church is wrong about things like NFP and modesty issues (and think all TV/movies are evil), but I am no longer in that camp. I was and it was very hurtful to me and my family. I blog about these issues at The Church Fanatic. (see link below) Follow the church teachings, attend the Mass you feel most comfortable in, and be who God has called you to be.

I’m a crazy traditionalist, so let’s see if I can help. 😉 Feel free to disagree, but I’d say that these opinions are generally shared by most of the people whom I know that identify as “Traditional”. I really think that the Fisheaters quote was spot on:
There is the idea that being a Catholic is not just about believing as the Church has believed but is also about worshipping God in the way the Church has passed down to us.
**NFP: **Traditional Catholics believe that NFP is an exception that has swallowed the rule in recent years. They believe that NFP should only be used in very rare situations and then, only under the advice and direction of the Priest and not at the whim of the couple in order to prevent selfishness or misunderstanding.

**Politics: **Traditional Catholics believe that the Church’s teaching on the Social Kingship of Christ is still relevant today and therefore, government should always be answerable morally for it’s actions. A Traditional Catholic would say that most societies today favour an exaggerated emphasis on individualism that stems from, amongst other sources, the French Revolutionaries. They would opine that this trend is one that has a profoundly negative impact upon Western society and that one fruit of this is the error of believing that separation of Church and State is a good thing for society. The Encyclical Quas Primas states:
“It is a dogma of faith that Jesus Christ was given to man, not only as our Redeemer, but also as a lawgiver, to whom obedience is due…It would be a grave error, on the other hand, to say that Christ has no authority whatever in civil affairs…Nor is there any difference in this matter between the individual and the family or the State; for all men, whether individually or collectively, are under the dominion of Christ.”
Traditional Catholics often hold political views that contradict many so-called ‘mainstream’ Catholics because they believe that systems of secular government are far from ideal and do not further the recognition of the Kingship of Christ or the authority of the Church.

Parental Responsibility: Traditional Catholics believe, generally, that the family is the central source of passing on the Catholic Faith and that it is the Parent’s specific responsibility (not the school or Church’s, though they can act as supports) to pass on the Catholic Faith in a true and complete manner to the children. In this sense, Parental responsibility is vital. Many traditional Catholic families do not homeschool but still take time to teach children the Faith from the basics of how to behave at Mass or simple prayers to more complex instruction when they are older. Many Parents choose to use the “Baltimore Catechism” as a basic instructional tool for understanding the Catholic Faith.

**Marriage: **Understood as the Sacramental union between a man and a woman that, when validly entered into, lasts for life. The Traditional Catholic believes that the primary purpose of Marriage is for the procreation and raising of children.

Sex in general: Is reserved for marriage and the primary purpose is for the procreation and raising of children and the secondary purpose is the unity of the spouses. Many Traditional Catholics feel that the primary purpose of sex has been subordinated to the secondary purpose and, for this reason, many Traditional Catholics cast a wary eye on the use of NFP without the guidance of a Priest (see above).

**Entertainment:**Traditional Catholics generally believe that most modern-day entertainment does not pose a beneficial influence in the life of a Catholic and, in the best-case scenario, is merely harmless. Traditional Catholics (especially in some parishes) are encouraged to avoid watching television programming altogether or to select programs that are free from harmful influences, especially where young children are concerned. The extent to which modern entertainment plays a role in daily life will vary from family to family, but generally most Traditionalists will agree that modern entertainment offers little of substantial value.

(Contd in next post…)

… (Contd. from previous post)

Other Religions: Traditional Catholics believe that the Catholic Church is the one true Church founded by Jesus Christ for the salvation of souls (hopefully all Catholics believe this!) They do not exclude the possibility of non-Catholics being saved, but would caution that the non-Catholics would be saved not through their false religion but rather, in spite of it, through the mercy of God. Traditional Catholics would urge Catholics not to participate in the activities of other religions as this can cause the appearance of scandal (meaning that non-Catholics may be mistaken into thinking that the action of the Catholic in participating in the other religious activity means that the false religion and Catholicism are both equally valid).

**Gender roles: **Traditional Catholics believe that God created male and female different but complementary to each other and that each has a different role to play in the world. Traditional Catholics would caution that the view that both genders are essentially the same is an error that denies the unique design for each sex according to God’s will for them.

Fashion: Modesty is emphasised but, other than that, most Traditional Catholics dress in a fashionable manner (if not a “trendy” one). Generally at Mass, Traditional Catholics believe that women should wear a skirt or dress and men should wear a suit or a shirt and tie. Children are also taught to dress in “Sunday best” in order to show reverence for the Blessed Sacrament. Traditional Catholics place great emphasis on bringing one’s own will into conformity with the Divine Will, so emphasis on things like good hygiene, proper dress, behaviour and decorum are stressed as being necessary for forming a good character and overcoming our own weaknesses to better shape our will.

Money: There is no specific teaching, but it falls under a broader umbrella of living in a responsible and Godly manner. Money is seen as a good thing generally, so long as the individual does not succumb to greed or worship of money, nor uses money to achieve nefarious ends. Generally, tithing is encouraged as is supporting the local Parish community in whatever way possible. Budgeting is encouraged generally for families of all income and most families understand that responsible money management is important in forming good character habits.

NFP opposed? Natural Family Planning is the ONLY form of planning pregnancies that is allowed.
