You have to eat meat on purpose for it to be something to feel guilty about. And I believe having lobster or crab on Friday is missing the point of fasting from meat on Fridays during Lent. In the olden days, having meat was a luxury, so giving it up on Fridays was truly a great pennace because it was something craved as “back then” all you had was your meat and potato and something green.
So if you LOVE fish and lobster and crab, or if you are a vegetarian, and never eat meat anyway, what can you give up on Fridays during Lent for pennance? I think that is the point.
Now if I have to give up COFFEE, I would probably slit my wrists…but meat isnt a problem.
I am making light of this…
Here is an idea, instead of giving up SWEETS for the rest of Lent, instead take 20 minutes of your time each day and say a Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Giving up sweets will only make your Easter outfit look better, but saying extra prayers, especially for those in Purgatory, is much more helpful and spiritual…
God bless you and may he send you the Holy Spirit for guidance…
