2 nights ago, I screwed up big time…well…I slept with this girl… i knew it was bad…but i was weak and i fell. the thing is, after the act i always feel so terrible and guilty. I wish that I would feel like that before the act always so that I won’t have that physical need to sleep with her (she’s not my wife…just a friend and its purely physical…I’m 29, she’s 42…i know…that’s why it wont work etc)

with that aside. I called a priest today for confession. He said he won’t be free till tomorrow at 2pm. So i booked it with him. So here’s the deal… i made an act of contrition on my own, went to mass and received communion.

question 1: did i commit a mortal sin by receiving Communion?
question 2: did i commit a mortal sin by going to mass?
question 3: if i were to die before going to confession tomorrow? will i go straight to hell and be engulfed in everlasting flames, fire and tortured by demons for all eternity?
question 4: after i go to confession., i still will have this urge to have sex with her again, but i will try not to, but the urge is so strong…it’s crazy…but i know its wrong and totally sinful…

This stuff really scares me. It really does, It’s crazy how an act like sex outside of marriage can result in you burning in a lake of fire for all eternity. I do think its not fair but I DO BELIEVE it is 100% true. I feel terrible for what i did, just sometimes I just get urges. i wish they werent there because it’s not like i want to be sinning you know? I just cant help my biology,…something i had no choice over…

with that said,

The Code of Canon Law states:

A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, which includes the resolution of confessing as soon as possible. (CIC 916)

so if i commit a mortal sin I shouldnt go to church ? I thought that i would still be required to go to church but not recieve communion…im so confused…

Fornication is grave matter, you recognize it as such and you consented to it.

That is a mortal sin.

Receiving communion in a state of mortal sin is a second mortal sin. The Church teaches that one mortal sin is sufficient to damn our souls to hell.

However, Jesus is waiting to forgive you, if you repent. He loves you.

In the future, you may want to consider cutting all ties with this woman if you feel too weak to withstand temptation and if it’s an occasion of sin. Then take them at time to spiritually strengthen yourself. Go to daily Mass. Get a spiritual director. You can do it! So many saints had to do the same thing.

Help has arrived.

“It’s crazy how an act like sex outside of marriage can result in you burning in a lake of fire for all eternity. I do think its not fair but I DO BELIEVE it is 100% true.”

Not if it’s a venial sin.

Also how do you know there’s a lake of fire in hell?

If you knew what you did was a sin of grave matter then you committed a mortal sin and you are not permitted to receive Communion until you have been to Confession. If you knew and nevertheless received Communion you committed a further sin of grave matter (mortal if you knew that).

If you are in a state of mortal sin you are expected to go to Confession as soon as you can but you are still required to attend Mass.

The purpose of not receiving communion, but still going to Mass, is that you see others receiving what you cannot receive.
It is a preview of Hell, where you see others in friendship with God, and know your own alienation from Him.
Canon Law will not help you be God’s friend. That is for the Church to use in guiding its thinking about issues, not for someone in Mortal Sin to use as an argument. When you are in Mortal Sin, Canon Law is no longer your possession; you are in a state of having abandoned your inheritance in the Kingdom of God, which includes your abandonment of Canon Law.

When you look at the Friends of God receiving communion, you will find out whether you wish to be one with them, and how badly you wish to be one with them as Christ’s Friend.

If you read Dante’s Inferno, you will see that the people entering Hell are lining themselves up as the shore, with no one herding them into Hell. They are moaning, yes, but that is where they want to go, just as you are moaning, but you still call that woman your friend and call yourself her friend.

She is not your friend, helping you to attain holiness and life. and you are not her friend, helping her to attain holiness and eternal life. You are both bemoaning your wretchedness, yet knowing you are going to continue in it. You are like the people waiting at the shore of the entrance to Hell, willingly there and moaning.

Resolve to do every little thing you do virtuously, thereby making use of the Virtues you were given in Baptism. “I am going to do this next thing virtuously”.

question 1: did i commit a mortal sin by receiving Communion? Yes
question 2: did i commit a mortal sin by going to mass? No

How does someone just end up sleeping with another person?

Anyways, I would have a very difficult time believing that you didn’t commit a sacrilege in receiving communion. Simply making an act of contrition doesn’t mean you has perfect contrition, which is quite rare and requires special graces. You should not have received communion. There was no need for you to do so. Furthermore, as this woman is an occasion of sin for you, you must avoid her, at the minimum of being alone with her. If you’re not resolved to give that up, then you really can’t have perfect contrition.

You might want to read Jesus’ parable about the king who held a wedding feast for his son (in Matthew 22:1-14).

The king invited lots of the best people, but they refused to come. Some even killed his servants who brought the invitation.

(This was a deadly insult to the king. And the guests who refused the invitation are like “good” people who refuse to become Christian, or refuse to do God’s will. Killing the servants was like martyring the prophets of old, or the Christians who preached the Word.)

So the king punishes the wicked guests, and starts again.

He says to his servants, “The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy. Go out to the crossroads and just invite anybody who comes along.” So the servants gave invitations to everybody they found, “both the bad and the good,” and they all showed up; and the wedding was filled with guests. The king was very happy.

But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who didn’t have on a wedding garment. And he said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here not wearing a wedding garment?”

The man had nothing to say.

(And the reason was that every Jewish man owned a wedding garment for his own wedding, and for going to other people’s weddings. If you didn’t own one, even the poorest man could always borrow one from his friends and neighbors, or from the synagogue; there were charities to do this, and the Talmud talks about it. Similar things were true for Jewish women, who would also always dress up for weddings and could always get something nice to wear somehow. There was no excuse for not wearing a wedding garment to a wedding feast.)
Then the king said to the servants, “Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness; there is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.”
For many are called, but few chosen."
Jesus is always willing to forgive our sins, as long as we are willing to come to Him and ask. Jesus always wants us to come to Mass.

But you can’t eat the wedding feast (ie, go to Communion) unless you are wearing a wedding garment (ie, your baptismal robe is clean of the spots of sin, because you have been absolved and are in a state of grace).

There is nothing wrong with just going to Mass and not receiving Communion. Plenty of us do it for reasons of not being properly disposed (for reasons like being angry at a family member or at the priest, or not feeling sorry for something bad we’ve done, or not having fasted before Mass) or because we’ve committed mortal sins.

Obviously, it’s sad to go to Mass and not receive Communion. But it’s a lot sadder not to treat the Lord with respect.

1 Corinthians 11:26-30:
"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the chalice, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the chalice of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
“But a man must examine himself, and he is to eat of the bread and drink of the chalice according to doing so. For he who eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Body of the Lord.”
(This means both not understanding and believing in the Body of Christ in Communion, and also not seeing himself as not being fully of the Body of Christ while he is in a state of sin. It works both ways.)
"That is why many are weak and sick, and many have died “fallen asleep”]. Yet if we would judge ourselves [first], we would not be judged.
“But while we are judged [in this way, for not discerning the Body], we are chastised by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.”
Receiving Communion unworthily usually only makes our souls sick (if we don’t know it’s a mortal sin) or die (if we do know and appreciate that it’s a mortal sin, ie, a deadly sin that kills the soul).

1 John 5:16-17 – “…There is a sin that is deadly… and there is a sin that is not deadly.”

This is more serious than a sickness of the body; but luckily for us, it gives us plenty of second chances to go to Confession and let our souls come back to life.

God isn’t trying to set traps for you or set up an impossible way of life. With His help, you can live a good life that doesn’t include things like sleeping around with random people. Obviously, it’s not easy to make your life less sinful, but it’s a lot less trouble to live that way!

Yes go to Church but don’t receive Holy Communion. Yes you committed one of the worst sins a person can commit. By receiving unworthily, you committed sacrilege against the Body and Blood of Christ. From my understanding this sin is worse than murder. Make sure you get a plenary indulgence after confession.

Make an act of contrition and try for perfect.

Yes the sins you committed can cause you to fall into eternal Hell. It is forever and ever. Our Lady said more souls fall into Hell for sins of the flesh than for any other reason.

When you are tempted, talk to our Mother and talk to our Lord. You can not sin when you are talking to God and His Mother.

I salute you
I salute your Guardian Angel

God please grant them grace to make a good confession before dying in Jesus Name I pray
Mother please ask God for this grace

DON’T DO IT AGAIN. You wound the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He loves you. He wants to forgive you but He does NOT want you to do it again. Do not speak to this woman ever again of your own free will, it is the near occasion of sin for you. That is also a grave sin. Cut off all contact with her. And do penance for your offenses against the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The sacrilege you committed is grave. It is against God’s Body and Blood. I don’t know if you had full knowledge though, because you said you made an act of contrition. NOW you know. Don’t do it again.

Don’t worry. God loves you. But yes, you put your soul in danger of eternal Hell. YES!

wish that I would feel like that before the act always so that I won’t have that physical need to sleep with her (she’s not my wife…just a friend and its purely physical…I’m 29, she’s 42…i know…that’s why it wont work etc)
You don’t have a “physical need” to sleep with her. You have a *desire *to sleep with her. This is rooted in our will.

If you cannot control that desire, and it sounds like right now you cannot, then you need to remove yourself from temptation. That means you need to cut out the contact with her. No more spending time together. No more talking or texting or IM or whatever. NO MORE.

Only an act of your will can put an end to this. So, you will have to make the decision not to interact with her anymore.
i made an act of contrition on my own, went to mass and received communion.
Receiving the Eucharist without confession was a poor decision. If you knew that was grave matter and that you should not do it, then you need to also confess that when you confess the rest. If you didn’t know it was wrong to do so, then it was venial, but also something you can still confess.

No matter our state, we can always go to Mass and we should not withhold ourselves from Mass if we are in a state of sin, particularly on Sundays and Holy Days when we have an obligation to be there. But we do refrain from communion until we confess.
if i were to die before going to confession tomorrow? will i go straight to hell and be engulfed in everlasting flames, fire and tortured by demons for all eternity?
Perhaps you should set up some regular spiritual counseling from your pastor. You don’t seem to have a firm grasp on what the Church teaches.
i still will have this urge to have sex with her again, but i will try not to, but the urge is so strong…it’s crazy…but i know its wrong and totally sinful…
And that is why cutting off contact with her is so important.
I just cant help my biology,…something i had no choice over…
Yes you can help it and yes you do have a choice. You are not an animal, you are a person. People have free will. You need to stop making excuses and start making better choices. You are 29 years old.

with that said,
The Code of Canon Law states: A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass
That part of the canon is referring to a **priest **celebrating Mass. A lay person does not “celebrate Mass”.
so if i commit a mortal sin I shouldnt go to church ?
No, you are misunderstanding that canon. Please talk to your pastor.
I thought that i would still be required to go to church but not recieve communion…im so confused…
Correct.

question 1: did i commit a mortal sin by receiving Communion?

If you did not realize that Communion is prohibited until after Confession (with exceptions), then it was not an actual mortal sin. Only unrepentant actual mortal sin condemns to Hell. So … make an act of perfect contrition and go to Confession.

question 2: did i commit a mortal sin by going to mass?

No.

question 3: if i were to die before going to confession tomorrow? will i go straight to hell and be engulfed in everlasting flames, fire and tortured by demons for all eternity?

Make an act of perfect contrition, then you will immediately return to the state of grace. You must still intend to go to Confession, but you won’t go to Hell, if you die.

question 4: after i go to confession., i still will have this urge to have sex with her again, but i will try not to, but the urge is so strong…it’s crazy…but i know its wrong and totally sinful…

You need to avoid near occasions of sin, which might mean that you have to end your friendship with her.

You should be studying the teachings of the Church, especially on morality, and pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet regularly (daily).

wow, thank you so much everyone. I have learned so much from reading your replies. It really has helped me. I have read it all and digested it all.

I am going to go to confession today and I will end all sexual relationships with her and all other women and I will pray for strength until I get married.

Thank you so much everyone. I was almost in tears reading all of this. It means so much. I cannot wait to return to a state of grace

You should go to Church if you are unable to go to confession but don’t accept the Body and Blood of our Precious Savior. The priest is the Celebrant not the lay people.
As soon as possible go to confession and confess both mortal sins.
If a child is conceived, be prepared for to love and care for this child for the rest of his or her life.
Be prepared to grieve and regret for the rest of your life if a child is conceived and aborted.

There are serious reasons why sex out of marriage is a serious sin against God, against the woman involved and against yourself.

Having sex outside of marriage is using another person as an object, a “thing” of pleasure and is showing complete disregard for the dignity and that person as a precious child of God. It is also showing complete disregard to yourself as a person and a precious child of God because you are allowing yourself to be used as a “thing” of pleasure.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that we’re rooting for you OP. It’s hard, but you can do it. Stay close to God. You’re in our prayers.:blessyou:

Help has arrived.

“It’s crazy how an act like sex outside of marriage can result in you burning in a lake of fire for all eternity. I do think its not fair but I DO BELIEVE it is 100% true.”

Not if it’s a venial sin.

Also how do you know there’s a lake of fire in hell?
Jesus said it:
“The fornicators and adulterers will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven, they will be thrown into the outer fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Go to Jesus in confession.
Tell that woman you never want to speak to her again. And never want to see her again.
Even say it’s a mortal sin and you don’t want to burn in hell, you want to fix your life with Jesus and get into Heaven.

For purity:
You must never listen to music, read books, newspapers, Internet sites, or talk or spend time with friends who are not chaste. All those things are occasions for sin.

You will remove occasions of temptation by censoring what you watch or read or listen to.

Also: do not go to places of impurity, eg nightclubs, houseparties, friends apartments (who are not chaste).

Join a prayergroup.
Go to adoration weekly.

Pray each day (if you do not pray each day for at least 10minutes, you cannot be Holy, prayer is what gives strength against temptations and gives you Holy thoughts).

Pray the St Michael prayer daily, sprinkle your room with Holy water each night, have a bottle of Holy water in your room, car, workplace, wear a blessed brown scapular and miraculous medal, pray psalm 91 daily,

Go to www.larrycummins.ie
Download for free his two free ebooks, read the spiritual warfare prayer each day (that is.at the back of his books)

The best book you could read about how to receive blessings from God:
“The Miracle Ship,” by Brian O’ Hare

Written about a guy in Northern Ireland called John Gillespie who is in the healing / deliverance ministry currently.

Jesus is waiting to forgive you in confession.

Considering #4 in the original list, I don’t know if it’s possible for the OP to make an act of perfect contrition at this time. He really needs to get to confession and truly repent of his sin.

capricacity, you need to break off your relationship with this woman. It is not helping either of you get to Heaven.

i love all of you people so much for caring for me to explain this all. I cannot believe how much time you all have taken into giving me the real truth and response. I went to confession today and was there for almost 20 minutes with the priest. I am now in a state of grace and i feel so good! I am going to tell the woman today that I don’t want to burn in hell for all eternity…

i will start praying more and going to adoration. Please keep on praying for me everyone I truly appreciate it

thank you so much!!!

I’m glad you were able to get to confession. The most important thing to remember for the future is not to receive if you are in a state of mortal sin. You may like to reflect on this caution used in the BCP (which we use a lot of in the Ordinariate) that stresses the importance of this point
Dearly beloved in the Lord, ye that mind to come to the holy Communion of the Body and Blood of our Saviour Christ, must consider how Saint Paul exhorteth all persons diligently to try and examine themselves, before they presume to eat of that Bread, and drink of that Cup. For as the benefit is great, if with a true penitent heart and lively faith we receive that holy Sacrament; (for then we spiritually eat the flesh of Christ, and drink his blood; then we dwell in Christ, and Christ in us; we are one with Christ, and Christ with us;) so is the danger great, if we receive the same unworthily. For then we are guilty of the Body and Blood of Christ our Saviour; we eat and drink our own damnation, not considering the Lord’s Body; we kindle God’s wrath against us; we provoke him to plague us with divers diseases, and sundry kinds of death. Judge therefore yourselves, brethren, that ye be not judged of the Lord; repent you truly for your sins past; have a lively and stedfast faith in Christ our Saviour; amend your lives, and be in perfect charity with all men; so shall ye be meet partakers of those holy mysteries. And above all things ye must give most humble and hearty thanks to God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, for the redemption of the world by the death and passion of our Saviour Christ, both God and man; who did humble himself, even to the death upon the Cross, for us miserable sinners, who lay in darkness and the shadow of death; that he might make us the children of God, and exalt us to everlasting life. And to the end that we should alway remember the exceeding great love of our Master and only Saviour Jesus Christ, thus dying for us, and the innumerable benefits which by his precious blood-shedding he hath obtained to us; he hath instituted and ordained holy mysteries, as pledges of his love, and for a continual remembrance of his death, to our great and endless comfort. To him therefore, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, let us give (as we are most bounden) continual thanks; submitting ourselves wholly to his holy will and pleasure, and studying to serve him in true holiness and righteousness all the days of our life. Amen.
Remember that you can always go to Mass however.
