Can anyone recommend a good study Bible?

    Excellent in my opinion–Oxford University Publisher…using the New American Bible translation which is the bible used in all of our liturgy celebrations…Holy Mass, the Sacraments, etc… I have the 1970 first edition…this second edition (2006) is a significant improvement. My only suggestion or concern…this is a hardcover edition…I personally prefer the softcover (there is a Personal Study Edition (PSE) 2007 that is softcover…but I don’t like all the commentary throughout the bible text in this PSE)…I like to put the softcover bible into a soft leather or cloth (zipper) book cover…easier to handle/use in my opinion without the hardcover rigidity…the book cover saves wear and tear on the front/back covers…and except for all my pencil underlining and highlight markings/notes. This CSB 2d Ed is an excellent bible to make personal notations or underline/highlight. An excellent and detailed review of this edition is located at the bottom of the page on the Amazon link listed above. Most importantly, the scholarly but easily understood lead-in-introductions to the books of the bible and the explanatory footnotes throughout are really quite excellent. I am clearly not a bible scholar or academician…but I do have questions and curiosities in simply trying to understand what the bible author is saying…and need a lot of help on most occasions…this book is terrific in that sense.
Second:

I also recommend that you also get a RSV-CE (Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition) bible for comparison and to me a more “sacred” sounding translation…it is great to compare a word or two or a sentence especially when something really catches your attention or curiosity. Most biblical scholars and theologians prefer the RSV-CE translation. It is less prone to some of the politically correct gender neutralization translations that you find in the NAB.

The original Jerusalem Bible, now out of print but plentiful on ebay, is fantastic as far as cross-references and notes go. I think it is a little more conservative than any of the NAB-based study bibles which contain some sketchy notes and borerline heretical info (such as the Gospel of Matthew may not have been written by Matthew!). The New Jerusalem Bible is a little more accurate then the original and much easier to find, but has inclusive language and revised notes that IMO are not as good as the JB.

If you have a bunch of money to blow check out the Douay Rheims Bible with Haydock Commentary…I got mine for around $100 but it has incredible notes and study materials. But if you don’t like archaic language it may not be for you.

The Navarre series and the newer Ignatius study bibles use the RSV-CE translation so are easier to understand, but you have to buy individual books. However, I did just see that there is an updated single book Navarre commentary for the entire new testament. But you would still have to buy all of the individual OT books.

So IMO you get the most bang for your buck with the JB/NJB, but if you want more traditional info and a more literal translation get the DR Haydock. If you have a lot of $ get the RSV-based books…or just buy them all!!😃
 
If you can find one, I recommend picking up an old Confraternity translation. It was really a nice translation with a balance of scholarly precision and traditional beauty. The notes were plentiful, helpful and easy to understand.

They used to be standard issue in Catholic schools until about 1970 (they got bumped by the original NAB) so there are still a lot of them floating around in used bookstores and parish storerooms. Definitely worth your while.
