I am having a little bit of a debate with some people and I need someone to answer this in laymen’s terms: How do we know the by isn’t just written by some crazy people (like L. Ron Hubbard wrote Dyanetics). Thanks! (It is preferable that the answer be short and sweet… they won’t be willing to read much).

It just seems highly unlikely that books written by that many crazy people would end up in one volume really.

There have been several discoveries by archeologists especially of locations mentioned in the Bible so in all liklihood there is a basis for truth in this book. Other than that we just have to go on Faith. Peace.

Well, for me, the answer is in the revelations of the truths from the Old Testament to the New Testament. But if they want a “drive thru” answer, short and sweet, they won’t find one. They need to be searching for the truth. If they aren’t searching for the truth they will not find it.
Isaiah, describes the messiah approximately 700 years prior to His arrival. The books of Wisdom and Sirach describe His suffering, death and resurrection several hundred years prior to His incarnation. For someone seeking the truth, it’s there.

We don’t have any such assurance. That’s why we need faith. To believe without proof is the essence of religion.

Unlike L Ron Hubbard’s book the Bible is not one cohesive document. The books in the bible were written at different times by different people, and then more than 200 years after the last of the authors was dead some other people decided of all of the different things out there claiming to be scripture what really was. Not much room for scams.

My “drive-through” answer-

The bible has a remarkable internal consistency. I really doubt that a collection of books by sixty-odd crazies would be so consistent with one another.

How does one know that any book is authentic?

There is no absolute proof.

One looks for consistency over a long time and corroboration by outside sources of the time.

The Dead Sea scrolls indicate the Church’s scrupulous protection of the text from change/editing/misprints for at least 2000 years.

The bible is most likely the most researched, debated, analyzed, and interpreted text in the history of man. I think we should feel comfortable that it is authenticly a 2000-3000 year old text that has not been changed.

As others have said, if one accepts the Bible’s age and that its text is authentic and original (although not necessarily accurate in its intent), then analysis of its ‘‘prophecies’’ add comfort to one’s Faith in its source.

There is no proof it is God’s word, just as there is no Aristotlean proof that there is a God. But IMO God doesn’t want there to be proof of either, so as to accomplish His goals.

The Bible was written by dozens of people over the course of more than 1500 years. This is well documented. It was not written by a single person. Nor were the book in the Bible assembled by one person either.
