I read an analysis of The Simpsons by someone, maybe 4-6 months ago, carried in one of the larger Catholic outlets (pretty sure either catholic.org or NC Register). I wish I could find the source because I consider those outlets quite different in their quality (both in their approach and credibility). That said, the writer more or less did assert that the show had less anticatholicism than many shows, and gave several examples of why the show was to be commended. It did point out, however, that Marge’s character had a significant anticatholic streak, with examples.

I watched the first season religiously (;)), but almost never after that, so I apologize that I do not have my own opinion on the matter. I’ll try digging around a little more for a link.

Marge is rather anti-Catholic, it is true. Her reaction to Bart and Homer’s conversion is quite scary for a character that is usually shown as being more open-minded (reading Darwin in ‘The Monkey Suit’ eg). As for less anti-catholicism than other shows, I don’t really watch any others so I couldn’t comment.

There was also an episode where Marge (in response to Bart’s “why can’t we at least be Catholic so we can get free communion wafers and booze?” on their way to church :o) says “Nobody’s going Catholic! Three children is enough, thank you!”

Here is a very recent piece. I find it somewhat odd that L’Osservatore would run such a piece, but perhaps that is a testament to the longevity and impact of the show.

Thank you very much for these links! They are exactly what I need.
Your help is very much appreciated!

Hey, big Simpsons fan here. I have to laugh at that Super Bowl ad, it is funny. The point being that the Church is anti-sex. This is a widely held opinion that is supported in a ton of media. Of course all you have to do is read a line in the Theology of the Body or listen to Christopher West for a minute to realize this perception is completely false.

You could write a significant portion of the paper on this ad and how misunderstood the church is
