Dear Nateangie/Mommy of Rosebuds:

What does your husband say about your being sterilized?
Does he want it?
Is he Catholic?
Is he pressuring you to have your tubes tied?
Are you afraid he’ll leave you if you suggest abstaining from sex?
Just wondering if you’ve stated all the facts surrounding your circumstances.
You do have free will, but you also have the knowledge that you WILL be in sin if you do get sterilized.
Good luck. I hope you can get to a point where you won’t desire to be sterilized.

I have a situation/question that I am hoping someone can answer with evidence from Catholic teaching/doctrine/dogma etc. This couple has been Catholic their entire lives and now has their 6th child on the way. They have tried to remain faithful to the “family planning” method but still keep having kids. They are considering having one of them “fixed” but was unsure where exactly the Catholic Church stood on this issue. I always thought the Chruch taught that if the mother’s life would be endangered by becoming pregnant again this procedure may be expectable. However, are their other situations where this is acceptable by the Church ( finances, mental health etc.)? Thank you so much for anyone who responds.
I am sorry I did not read all the preceding message, so I could be repeating something others have said over and over again. But just in case:

The Church teaching is simple and can basically be summarized in one point. Sex is a loving act oriented toward the creation of a new life. so HAVE SEX WHEN YOU WANT A CHILD, OTHER THAN THAT EXERCISE MODERATION AND ABSTINANCE.

God is LOVE, TRUTH, and LIFE.

When we make love we are celebrating our being image of our God. So the love making act have to include and illustrate those three aspects in order to be perfect.

There is no LOVE in endangering a women’s LIFE. I think that a couple who is used to practicing moderation would be able to abstain easly from sex, if a pregnancy could endanger someone’s life(mother, baby, or members of the family), or for other reasons essential to the whole family staying united and in full communion with each other. A communion of TRUTH, LOVE, and LIFE.
We are called to subdue our bodies, to self-control, and to chastity even in marriage. So there are not TRUTHfull all those arguments which support ways which would go against someone’s LIFE. And thought they may sound loving, they are really not oriented to sustain LOVE, TRUTH, and LIFE in us.

For more authoritative informations. See the section in the CCC which talks about
  • God in : I BELIEVE IN GOD / God, ‘He who IS’ is ‘Truth and Love’ (214 and more)
  • LIFE IN CHRIST (1691 and more)
  • Other parts of the CCC specially those in the PROFFESSION OF FAITH and LIFE IN CHRIST.
God bless

Hi everyone, and may I interject?
I read “nateangie”'s blog, and I know where you are coming from!!! I am the proud mother of 10 children, 9 of whom I gave birth to. I studied the NFP book, and even trained to be an instructor!!! I used the temp and mucus method simultaneously, and stridently attempted to avoid pregnancy. I hoped to adopt, an went through home studies and applied for adoption, only to get pregnant before finalizing anything. I had been frustrated for years, resigning myself to having another child, and believing that I was just a very fertile person. Well, there is a lot of truth to that point, and I am blessed to be a rare mother of so many fabulous children, who are quickly growing up and making lives for themselves. It is tremendously rewarding to be a part of their lives. One glaring point that I see now that I didn’t during the first 15 years is that my husband, even though he trained and supported NFP, was not patience or understanding enough to abstain for the proper amount of time needed to avoid the fertile period. We constantly cut the corners and tested the timelines, and consistently got pregnant time after time. I recommend, if you are serious about seeing better results in planning, to talk to your NFP teachers, your pastor, or someone in the faith, to help you and your husband train to be better partners in this experience. Good luck and God bless!
