Recently, I became interested in lucid dreaming. I had heard about it from a friend and so I looked into it. The first night after I heard about it, I had an astral projection. Then I started doing some stuff that supposedly influences lucid dreams. These included recording dreams, reality checks, etc. Then I tried to induce a lucid dream through a technique in which you keep your mind awake while the body falls asleep. This resulted in another astral projection.

Today, I became aware that these are occult practices. I had no idea that these things were of sinful nature, and what evil they could bring to your life. As of now, I am very frightened. I don’t know what to do. I’m concerned about the consequences of it. I intend to stop it immediately.

One thing I don’t know is that if I cease to do this (which I will), will evil things still come into my life as a consequence of this? If I had no knowledge that this was sinful/evil, did I still sin?

Please say a prayer for me if you are reading this, I would appreciate it and greatly need it. I didn’t know that these things were evil.

🍿

Am interested to see the answers you get.
Sorry I can’t help with info.

Will pray for you though.

First, go to confession. Next, receive communion. Repeat often.

Listen to the counsels of your confessor regarding these issues. So long as you are in a state of grace, you are safe. Trust in God.

I’m sorry I don’t know, but have I committed a mortal sin? I didn’t know this was bad… 😦

There is no such thing as astral projection, I don’t care how real it seems to you. That is a trick your mind plays on you. To even believe in it is a sin. Satan just loves it when we fall for this New Age nonsense. You can open yourself to all sorts of evil things. Go to Confession as soon as possible, confess this nonsense, and pray for protection to the Holy Spirit. Renounce all of this thoroughly and completely, and find some Christian friends who won’t lead you into this garbage. Go to Mass and receive Jesus into your body frequently, and to Adoration.

If you didn’t know it was a sin, then while it may be a * grave* sin, it isn’t a mortal sin. Also you’re obviously trying to repent of it. Like another poster said, go to confession, receive Communion, listen to what the priest has to say. Trust in God and you’ll be fine.

If you were truly ignorant that this was grave matter, then it was not a mortal sin. Even still, bring it to the keys and accept your confessor’s counsel. If you are fearful, then let the benefit of sacramental grace put your mind at ease.

A person cannot unknowingly commit a mortal sin.

If the acts you performed were for the purpose of seeking hidden knowledge then the act is grave matter.

And - you are mistaken about astral projection. A spirit is not separated from its human body until bodily death. Astral projection is a myth.

Let me clarify: I do not believe astral projection was real, I knew it was fake because I saw some impossible things. And I truly had no idea that this was bad. I knew very little about it actually, and I didn’t even intend to do astral projection

Also I don’t know what to tell the priest in confession. Should I just say occult practices? I’m not sure he will know what astral projection is.

Thanks for the help so far everyone. I appreciate it, and I am trying to do my best to get this out of my life once and for all

For a sin to be mortal one has to know it is serious and deliberately do it anyway, but only your priest can determine that with you. Things done out of ignorance can mitigate the guilt, but objectively, messing with the occult is a violation of the First Commandment. Go to Confession, as I said before, and renounce all association with anything New Age or Occult.
Don’t mess with things you know nothing about and consider this a lesson learned.

God always forgives one if one is sincere and repentant.

I suggest you start educating yourself about your faith so you are able to make wiser decisions in the future, and start to grow closer to God.

Good for you! Just tell the priest what you’ve been up to, and that you’ve been messing with the occult. If he has questions, he will ask. God bless you.

For the record, Catholic theology condemns magic and any attempt at it as a grievous sin against the virtue of religion and the First Commandment. Anyone who undertakes a magical or an occult act or performance seriously bases it on the expectation that demons or lost souls will interfere. It’s sinful even if you’re just curious, because it shows either lack of faith or foolish superstition.

So now you know, and knowing is half the battle. You might want to ask your confessor for some good moral instruction if ever you are doubtful as to issues such as these.

God bless.

I for one didn’t know that lucid dreaming was a sin.
I questioned it a bit (but not with much concern as it is something I’m just not interested in), then I saw a thread on here where many were talking about it as a legit thing, and not as a occult practice, and I thought, well, okay then.

Now I am thoroughly confused. So is lucid dreaming alone considered 'occult'? Or is it *just* the astral projection?

As for OP, if a person truly doesn't know something is a sin, then they are not as culpable.

A good Confession and a devout Holy Communion are the greatest tools to drive out demonic influence. They’re far more powerful than any exorcism. Make frequent use of those and be in close contact with your confessor/spiritual director, and God will keep you safe.

Lucid dreaming is nothing more than the development of concentration such that you may become aware of yourself dreaming. This allows you to ‘control’ your own dreams. What sin do you speak of? Now, I know one could simulate pornography or violence during a lucid dream: Have you done something like that?

I myself prefer flying. You have nothing to fear about the interior of your own mind unless you invite evil in and you do not need to be dreaming to do that. Many men harbor evil fantasies even as they look about with waking eyes. For the same reason that men do not fear normal dreams, you should not fear lucid dreams either.

How is lucid dreaming an occult practice? I’m confused as to what the OP even did wrong?

I think I’ve had lucid dreams most of my life. They were not intentional, just I would -more oft’ than not- realize I was dreaming. lol, sometimes it would be a good dream and I would make myself wake up to circumvent the disappointment of it not being real. (the dreams weren’t sinful).
What about intentionally trying to lucid dream? Is that okay? (without all the astral projection stuff I mean)

Mortal sin requires grave matter, knowledge of the gravity, and intent to commit. Absent 1 pf those 3, no mortal sin. I would talk to a priest, though, in case you opened the door to evil.
