My husband and I are newly married it will be one year in August. We started out our marriage using contraceptives for the first 7-8 months or so of our marriage. He wanted to use NFP but I was new to the faith and though it was silly but now I have started to grow in my faith and become more educated on the subject of contraceptives I see how dumb I was both my husband and I want to make the change to NFP. However this has been very difficult we have been going through a time of abstinence untill we can start using NFP. We live in the Portland Oregon area and are having a very hard time finding any classes the only place that seems to have classes are the couple to couple league and the natural family services. No churches in the area offer the classes. Both of these organizations do not start classes till September. After September its three classes spaced out over the time period of three months. Now we are looking into the self taught classes through online and with the use of a book. I have not been able to find anyone to talk to about this in order to get advice and help. Can anyone give me some advice as to what I can do.

  1. Buy Taking Charge of Your Fertility
  2. Sign up for FertilityFriend.com (I recommend the VIP version…it’s worth it).
I taught myself when I was 18. I swear it isn’t hard. I hated the class I had to take when I was preparing for marriage. TCOYF is so easy to understand. You’ll be fine!

I also live in the Portland Oregon area and I know a wonderful young couple who teach NFP. They are certified and have taught many classes - both one-on-one and groups. I just spoke with them and they would be happy to teach you! I just have to figure out how to get their info to you - I know there was something dealing with this when I signed up. Would you be interested? They are just a great couple!

My husband and I did the home study course on the symptothermal method from CCL while we were engaged. I read the manual and started practicing. The three chart reviews they did was more than enough for me (I only sent in two) and I thought the manual was very clear. My cycle at the time was long, but regular, and I had no troubles interpreting what was going on. If you are regular and healthy, a home study course would probably be enough to get you started. If there are health issues (endo, PCOS, etc) that affect your cycles, you will need more one on one instruction to get started. In that case, I don’t think the home study course would be a good option for you.
