No offense intended, but that feeling is very subject to change, as feelings often do.

So now that you have accepted that Peter was the Rock in Matthew 16:18, what further objections do you have about the Papacy? 🙂
  1. when did Jesus give Peter authority over worldly affairs (as in the middle ages)
  2. The Inquisition WAS supported by the pope, don’t tell me it wasn’t because it was. You know what I usually hear as a response? ONLY 1200 people actually died.
  3. When did it become the archbishop’s job to quietly move around and cover up child molesting priests?
  4. Didn’t Jesus say not to refer to people as Father?
  5. People in my religion class asked about stuff the early church fathers said about no salvation outside the church. The response was "well that stuff was before vactican 2. Popes can just overrule stuff previous popes said?
  6. Saying that I have to believe stuff about Mary, when it doesn’t take away from her holiness and can’t be proven either way.
  7. Was Peter’s authority ever meant to be handed down?
  8. The idea that a fallible man can become a fallible who can become a fallible bishop who can become a fallible cardinal who magically becomes infallible when elected pope?
  9. Induldences, 'nuff said.
These are all the ones about the pope

These are all very good questions 🙂 I’m busy with homework right now, so I’ll get back to them when I can. Hopefully these can all be cleared up 👍

You can tell them if you want, but don’t expect them not to be upset. In their eyes, your soul is at stake, so of course they are not going to be happy. What do you expect? I just hope your not leaving for immature reasons such as being popular with a certain circle friends or some girl. Human beings cannot fulfill your existence; they are imperfect. Perhaps it will take you a little more time and experience to realize that.

Good luck prodigal son.

No, actually quite the opposite. I have worried that leaving may cause some of my friends to outcast me because I go to a VERY traditional school

No, my friend, you are wrong about that. I’ve been closer to God than ever 🙂
This is relatively simple.
You have the moral obligation to obey your parents in this respect because you are still a child. You can tell them of your intent to leave the Church, but for the time being you are still obliged to follow their wishes.
On the issue of what to say:
After study and reflection I feel compelled to join church x. I understand that I am young and that I have a duty to honor and respect your wishes. I just thought it was important to let you know how I feel about this.
Further points to consider:
Consider that most of the folks you run into on this forum have lived your life span several times over. We remember age 16 well. None of the decisions I made at 16 have any bearing on my life whatsoever. In time you will come to realize this, but right now you find it difficult it accept. You are a typical teen-ager.

  1. when did Jesus give Peter authority over worldly affairs (as in the middle ages)
When he gave him the keys that bound and loosed heaven and earth.
  1. The Inquisition WAS supported by the pope, don’t tell me it wasn’t because it was. You know what I usually hear as a response? ONLY 1200 people actually died.
So what?
  1. When did it become the archbishop’s job to quietly move around and cover up child molesting priests?
Never, so what?
  1. Didn’t Jesus say not to refer to people as Father?
No. He said call no man father, but anyone else can be called father.
  1. People in my religion class asked about stuff the early church fathers said about no salvation outside the church. The response was "well that stuff was before vactican 2. Popes can just overrule stuff previous popes said?
On some issues, yes they can. On some issues, no they cant. Does a Pope overruling another Pope bother you? It is the rule rather than the exception in all non-Catholic churches that prior generations are overruled by current ones…that is why Protestantism is not comprised entirely of Lutherans.
  1. Saying that I have to believe stuff about Mary, when it doesn’t take away from her holiness and can’t be proven either way.
Nothing can be proven. Take, for example, your claim that “Jesus said call no man your father”. Can you prove that?
  1. Was Peter’s authority ever meant to be handed down?
It seems like a pretty stupid question after 2000 years of waiting for Christ to return. What exactly did Peter accomplish with his authority? He didnt even manage to have Scripture compiled, and he failed to mention that a “New Testament” was forthcoming as a rule book for the Christian faith. He left a lot of unfinished work that was accomplished by others he put in charge.
  1. The idea that a fallible man can become a fallible who can become a fallible bishop who can become a fallible cardinal who magically becomes infallible when elected pope?
Individual interpretation of Scripture has proven one thing for certain: we cannot use the NT to unequivocally know some of the very basics of our faith. If we cant know without question even the basic rules of our faith, then what is the purpose of having Scripture at all? That is an unanswerable quandary for those who embrace Sola Scriptura. For the Catholic faithful Scripture is the means God reveals to His chosen instruments the absolute truths of our faith. You cant “prove”, as you said earlier, that any of the beliefs you hold are unambiguously communicated by Scripture.
  1. Induldences, 'nuff said.
Sounds like a bluff to me.
These are all the ones about the pope
I’ve heard em all a thousand times. I remain unimpressed. You have questions - congratulations. When you have some serious answers then you will be in a position to start making decisions on your own: you havent demonstrated that yet - not by a long shot.

Oh i do have answers, nobody has asked for them 😉 people only asked for my objections

You know what, I just realized this a huge waste of everyone’s time. I am 100% convinced of my beliefs and you are 100% convinced I’m wrong. This isn’t going anywhere. You are not going to bring me back. So I apologize, especially to you, coolduude.Anyway, as I’m no longer Catholic, I won’t be posting here anymore. So bye! You should all know that I respect you and your beliefs. God bless. 🙂

I’ll pray for you.

I have questions for you then.
  1. You say you believe in the Real Precense. What church besides the Catholic Church will provide this for you, and by what authority will they do so?
  2. What church constructed the Bible?
  3. Was the church in #2 the one Jesus founded?
  4. What is the church in #2 and #3 known as today?

May God guide you on your sojourn in the wilderness, and may He bring you safely home in His good time. I pray also that it not take as long as it took me (35 years).

At sixteen I felt I had most of the answers. At seventeen I was even more sure. It wasn’t until my late twenties/early thirties (and many mistakes) that I realized there were far more holes than consistancy, far more questions than answers, in what I thought I knew.
Then began the real work of getting past myself and getting back to God and it was the Eucharist, the real and true Eucharist that did it.

Two words of advice and I hope you read them.
Keep your heart always turned toward the Two great commandments. The core of our faith is Love.
When you find, in your study and research, the many variations and contradictions among the various Protestant faith groups, all claiming to be “Bible Based” and “Spirit Led”, I ask you to remember that passage in Mt 18: 15-18 and the Instruction Form our Dear and Precious Lord Himself to, “Tell it to The Church”.

Peace
James

  1. when did Jesus give Peter authority over worldly affairs (as in the middle ages)
In teaching about the Kingdom of God it will always have an effect upon the secular world.

However, I wouldn’t bag the Church for that since any objective student of history will show that the reformers did some equally weird things. Go back and see what the Irish & English Catholics endured under Protestant rulers. He who is without sin, right?
  1. The Inquisition WAS supported by the pope, don’t tell me it wasn’t because it was. You know what I usually hear as a response? ONLY 1200 people actually died.
So if the church was so bad why did most people beg to be tried by the church instead of their respective secular governments? Even if 1200 were killed…how is that any different than the persecution of Catholics in Ireland and England by Protestants. I suspect that the death toll was at least equal…and that’s only a single example.

Ever hear of the Salem witch trials? That wasn’t Catholics…
  1. When did it become the archbishop’s job to quietly move around and cover up child molesting priests?
I don’t know, when did it become necessary for this?
StopBaptistPredators.org and this Report: Protestant Church Insurers Handle 260 Sex Abuse Cases a Year

Still feel like throwing those stones? I wouldn’t.

You’ll have to be more specific than this.

Magically? I’ll thank you to keep a civil Christian attitude in these discussions as befits one who names Christ as His Lord sir.

Primer on Indulgences
Myths About Indulgences

I think you’ll find (as I did) that you have been misled by well meaning people with Bibles and a truck load of personal and errant interpretations that actually contradict both the Word of God and the authentic and verifiable writings of the Early Church. Many of whom have a personal agenda to oppose anything the Catholic Church teaches without actually understanding its teachings to begin with.

You yourself are something of a case in point. Like me, you think you know what you are talking about when in fact, we should have been able to answer all these objections that you have raise ourselves rather than buying into the misinformation that you have apparently accepted as fact.

For instance: Have you read the entire Bible yet? All 73 books? (After all, let’s be objective here)

I have…many times over and am doing so again even now. It is, in fact, one of the main reasons that I am a Catholic now and forever.

Oh i do have answers, nobody has asked for them 😉

Yeah, too bad you didn’t offer them because you’d discover how really weak they are.

Cut and run then? Figures…I did the same thing. I knew it all.

See ya when ya get back. 🤷

You are a typical teen-ager.
Yeah I wish I was as smart now as I was at 16.

Between about 16 and 23 I knew everything and I was surrounded by idiots.

Then all of a sudden everyone else got so much smarter.

I wonder what “they” did?

Look, I don’t know if you’re still reading this or not. I’m praying that you are.

I’m not going to tell you not to leave. I can’t very well tell you how to tell your parents because I don’t know you and I don’t know your parents. Some parents are real strict and demand that you just go to their church simply because they said to, without really giving you a good reason. The sad truth is that most of the time our own parents don’t know WHY they are Catholic except that they believe in the Eucharist.

If you’re anything like me though, it’s not good enough that somebody just tells you that you have to believe this or that. Heck, I thought mass was really boring. I didn’t understand why the church seemed so dull and yet acted like it could tell people what they could and couldn’t do. I also thought that it judged people like the Homosexuals and that it wasn’t their fault that they were Gay. I didn’t think the church had any business telling people that loved each other whether or not they could have sex or not, or tell married people whether they could use contraception or not, etc.

I had a load of friends and siblings telling me that I should leave the Catholic church and go to their church which was a LOT more fun and LOVED the Lord!

All I can do is tell you what I did and recommend that you try it to. (again, I don’t know if you’re like me or not, but you’re probably pretty smart.). Before you leave do this much: 1) Find out exactly what the Catholic Church actually believes. (not what someone told you we believe. Not even what a priest told you because some of them are wrong and some are anything but true Catholics and will tell you what they want you to think Catholics should believe in order to spread their own brand of faith.) 2) Find out WHY we believe what we do? I mean there has to be a reason that we believe that practicing homosexuality is wrong, what is that reason?? 3) Lastly find out WHERE these beliefs came from. I had a hard time believing that there were just a bunch of old men sitting around a table thinking that it would be funny to have people stand up, kneel, and sit down during mass just for the fun of it. I refused to believe that they just “made up” beliefs without them actually coming from somewhere.

Then I asked myself if there was any writings from people around the time of the apostles? I mean if there were apostles and disciples that wrote the Bible, there were probably other people that wrote about Jesus at that same time too, right? I wanted to find out if there were and how could I find out what those writings said. It was when I started reading writings from the followers of the apostles that I was totally amazed! At LAST I FOUND WHERE we got our beliefs from! It was a real eye opener, let me tell you. The other thing that I needed to know was the answer to my questions about my faith. You can’t just ask any Catholic to help you with those answers because quite frankly some Catholics really SUCK at answering those questions. Some have no patience with you or get real fed up with you asking and not understanding. But, there are people that are REALLY good at it and they have the world of patience.

If you do this much and after knowing the real truth about our belief and why and where it comes from, you still don’t agree with it, then you don’t. Just keep praying about it and ask God to show you the truth. Never stop searching for TRUTH. Don’t ever be satisfied with what you have learned, but keep learning. Also, remember to be very careful that someone isn’t misleading you. Always look for the proofs of their faith.

If you’re still reading this and you want someone who will stay with you on your journey and help you find people that can patiently answer your questions, let me know. There’s a lot of people that really “get” where you are right now, even if it doesn’t seem like it.

No matter what you decide, I would at least suggest that you try to keep talking to God. Try to keep those lines of communication open with Him. You’ll come out the other side of this. I’ll pray that your parents keep loving you know matter what and that they understand where you are right now in your faith walk.

Keep looking up my friend,
Mary

First of all I’d like to apologize for coming in the middle of this thread. My mistake; I didn’t realize that it was already going for quite a while. That being said, I’ve now read the entire post and really hope that once again you’ll return to see what else is being said.
This is not a tantrum thrown at authority. This is the result of actually reading and reflecting on the Word of God. Jesus is my authority. The Lord is my Shepard.
Let’s start here. You acknowledge that you rely on Sacred Scripture as your authority and it’s my authority too as the Word of God. So let’s go with that.

I’ve found that if you’re going to say that the Bible is the inspired word of God and it’s your reason for your decisions on what to believe and what not to, then there’s no sense in convincing you to believe anything that anyone else has written. But if Jesus is, as you say, your authority, and the Bible is, as I believe you’re implying, God’s written word, then I’m guessing the Bible is what you are using to decide on your beliefs. Would that be correct?

If we then will be using the Bible to discuss our beliefs than would you agree that ALL of the Bible is inspired by God and not just some? The reason that I ask is that I believe that ALL of the Bible is inspired by God and not just some and therefore we cannot dismiss or throw out any of it that we do not like or that doesn’t suit our arguements. Would you agree?

Another thing that we cannot do is insert a meaning to the Scriptures that is not there at all. For example, when Jesus says, “for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.”( JN 6; 55) we cannot explain this verse by saying that He meant that His flesh was “symbolic food” and “symbolic drink”, because that’s not what it says does it? Or when He says that, “unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.” (John 6;53) we likewise cannot say that he meant, “Unless you eat of the bread which is my symbolic flesh and drink of the wine, which is my symbolic blood, you have no life in yourselves” can we? Because that is clearly not what it says and there is no indication other than our own personal feelings on the topic that would cause us to think otherwise.

So if you do return than you should state the rules for this debate that you wish to have and stick to them.

I would highly suggest though that you give Coolduude a chance because from everything that I’ve read he along with a few others are clearly educated on the correct faith of the Catholic Church and can help you clear up what are obviously some major misunderstandings of our faith. Unfortunately there are some others that seem a bit foggy or misinformed still on the true beliefs of our faith, so for now I would feel very confident in suggesting that you keep your questions aimed at Coolduude with just a few others that you already were conversing with.

From the questions on the Papacy that you listed you have MANY MISunderstandings on that topic. I am a recently trained Lay Ecclesial Minister in the Catholic Church (graduated from the local Catholic Seminary) and have been a lifelong Catholic and it has only been in the past 3 years that I have truly started to be convinced of the absolute truth of this faith. It was like all the puzzle pieces fit together perfectly without needing to be jammed into place! When you learn about Judaism and their beliefs and their Bible (our Old T.) and look at the New T. and how it fulfilled it perfectly and then you read the earliest accounts of the Christians it absolutely blows your mind! You wind up thinking, "If only others would listen to what I have learned and look at the evidence they would never question again which Church is the true church. The problem is so many refuse to listen thinking that they already KNOW what we believe and that they already KNOW the truth. Stop closing your ears and eyes and simply Look at the evidence. We can’t convince a person that won’t even try to listen to the truth and the proofs!

Why do you think that it matters so much to us whether or not a very young boy leaves our faith? Do you think that we have nothing better to do with our time? In one very real sense, NO! There is nothing better than to lead a soul to the truth about Jesus Christ and the Church he founded. If it wasn’t for being absolutely positive of this truth and seeing proofs that are so convincing that we can no longer argue against them, I would simply give up and go to bed, as it is, I and others are spending a lot of time praying for you and digging out any quotes we can that will show the truths to you. You are our brother and we can’t stand watching you be deceived by others; even if the others don’t mean to deceive but are also deceived as well. (and yes, people who are deceived and therefore don’t belong to the Catholic Church can still go to Heaven. It’s those who willingly refuse to even listen to the truth or turn from it once they know it to be the truth that we worry about.)

As for the Lutheran Church. Why would you join a church that was started 1500 yrs later by a man that wanted to throw out Bible books such as James, which he called, an epistle of straw", Revelation, and various others and add the word “alone” to a scripture that would clearly change the meaning of the text, and then say that he didn’t care whether it was in the original translation or not, that he knew it wasn’t but that he wanted it there because he said it should be there and that was good enough! (I’m paraphrasing here, but I can get you the actual quote if you’d like.) Do you actually think that the Holy Spirit was with that man when he started his new church?

Peace (con’t next spot)

Con’t from above…

Please don’t leave before you’ve had time to get all of your questions answered and find out the truth. Coolduude was leading you correctly and you’ve got all the time in the world to leave once you get all your answers. At least this way you’ll know what you’re leaving. Right now it’s very clear to anyone that knows and understands the Catholic faith that you do not know what you are talking about, even if you think you do. The Catechism is hard to understand, but read it all first and ask someone to clarify the parts that you think you understand, but that seem to offend you and go against the scriptures.

By the way, why in the world would the Catholic Church put anything into the Bible that clearly spoke against her beliefs? Ex. Call no man father? If we felt that verse meant that we shouldn’t call any human being father, then why didn’t we simply leave that out? Doesn’t make much sense does it? By the way, Paul tells his followers that he is their “father” and that is also in scripture. Was God making a mistake to put those words in there. Remember these ARE the written words of God, aren’t they?

Find out all of the answers before you leave. You owe it to yourself and your parents at the very least.

Peace to you brother.

Oh i do have answers, nobody has asked for them 😉 people only asked for my objections
A shame you “wasted your time” and already left. I for one would like to know your answers.

Nothing is gained at yelling “you’re wrong”, though on the subject of objections you can’t blame people like Church Millitant replying on why one believes what they do.

If you haven’t left entirely, at the very least do post your answers. I’m sure it’ll be quite enlightening to many (after all, you’re quite set on the truth you found).
