I hope the title reflects the point enough to get someone to open this.
I have a very close friend (yes it really is a friend) who was talking to me about his ailing marriage. He is about to see a therapist of some sort. I suppose this a stepp in the right direction but I usually cringe when I hear this.
He is catholic but admittedly falling away to a degree (not that he was ever really devout). Anyway my advice to him was to find a therapist who , at least, begins with the same moral code as him. I went on to reenforce the catholic view of marriage. I believe some therapists take the “are you happy? you should be view” as opposed to the marriage is love and love is sacrifice view.
He used the term “love but not in love”. I wanted to grab him by the proverbial lapels and say everything I had to say about this. To a certain point I did but he is in a fragile state of mind so I went very easy and very sympathetic with him. Only falling short on verbially agree with his world view.
Anyway, to get to the point of this request, can anyone suggest good catholic reading material on this matter? I am not the one to articulate this for he is too close to me and coming from me it may be perceived as just me being overly pious and rightous.
I’d prefer he read good material by a good catholic writer who is much better than myself at articulating this beautiful teaching from the church.
As much as I’d like him to read Love and Responsability by JPII, I’d prefer something he might be more willing to actually pick up and read.
Any/all ideas welcome, thanks in advance.
