So, today I go to my son’s mothers house to pick him up (we’re separated). And I was shocked to see a “Doktor Snake’s Voodoo spell book”. I was completely shocked. I said nothing to her about it. But after some time thinking about it, I’m obviously concerned for not only her well and spiritual being but my own sons!

A couple points to ponder…
-She is not Catholic. She does believe in God or in a God but considers herself “more spiritual than religious”. Rather she’s even Christian or not at this point is unknown.
-My son has not been baptized yet.
-I am not officially Catholic yet, though I am attending RCIA in the fall and look forward to being confirmed Easter. So, though I’m not official I kinda do already consider myself Catholic.
-I go to mass every Sunday

So, any suggestions? What should I do? Do I talk to a priest? Baptize my son?

Please pray for my son and his mother. Thanks.

Ask your wife what her purpose is for having the book. Maybe she is just reading it out of interest - maybe someone gave it to her. Ask before jumping straight to, “She’s practicing voodoo!”

Have your son Baptized ASAP.

God Bless

She is not my wife, we are separated. We dont live together. I had a child with her before I was awake in Christ and before he brought me home to the church. All that said, good advice. I have thought that it may have been given to her or that she picked it up out of curiosity. I’ve just heard that voodoo is evil and satanic. And it’s a “spell book”. I don’t want that coming down on my son.

Agreed. I have a copy of the Koran. It’s not because I do or have ever espoused Islam.

I have two bibles, both on display in my home next to a shadow box filled with pictures of me and my grandma. One is her very nice, but extremely old and worn bible, it was probably the item that meant the most to her. Next to it is the first adult bible I ever owned. She gave it to me when I was baptized. I’m not a Christian. Those bibles haven’t been opened in 10 years. But they mean something to me as a tribute to her.

I also have a rosary hanging in my car. I’m certainly not Catholic and I’ve never prayed the rosary in my life. But it was a gift from my fiance’s sister and it means a lot to me.

Don’t jump to conclusions, you don’t know why she has it.

So you never married her? When you said separated, that means someone who is married but has separated for a time. You just broke things off with her.

You can’t compare a voodoo spell book to the koran though…
I don’t think he was. I think the point was just that you can’t make assumptions about why someone owns a religious book. My bet on this one would be curiosity. Either that or it was in a big box of books she bought for a buck at a yard sale. (I have some very weird books that I’ve accidentally bought like that.)

Same here I’ve got loads of books on ruinic divination and tarot cards from my uncle, he’s a druid and its so cool he’s got this mace with a badger skull on it! And btw don’t worry about your sons practicing voodoo cause he won’t understand it and I think God in his wisdom won’t think he’s being serious and also if your going to baptise your son make sure his mums fine with it.

I just looked it up on Amazon and one of the “spells” is to bring back a lost lover. Maybe you two should sit down and have a talk about what went wrong with the relationship and what is in the best interest of your son. It could be she is just feeling lonely and powerless at the moment and it would help to clear the air about her intentions.

Its best not to jump to conclusions like that because if your wrong it would make life absolutely rubbish for the kid.

I suppose I should have written a little bit more of a brief history of our relationship. For starters, my son is only 3. Me and her separated, or for a better phrase “broke up” shortly after the child was born. We were never married. We haven’t been with each other in any way since he was born. I now have a new woman in my life who I’ve been with for over a year now. She has a man in her life as well…or at least as far as I know. Why we separated are irrelevant, there is no possibility of us reconciling.

I’m on the fence about rather to baptize him with her consent or not. Knowing her, the book could have been given to her by a friend, or picked up out of curiosity from somewhere. But it just doesn’t sit right with me…not sure why. I mean, it’s a book of “spells”.

From what I know about casting “spells” on people, which are of Satan…it ends up coming back worse on the person casting the spell. Especially since myself, my new girlfriend and even my son (he was christened in another Christian faith) are covered with the blood of Jesus Christ.

She has the potential to be the type of person that holds grudges…I know I’m reading a lot into this, but I can’t help it. If she was trying to cast a spell on me or someone else, I wouldn’t be wholeheartedly surprised.

Talk to a priest and pray, pray, pray.
I don’t know what the OP has to complain about! My wife is paid to sing at funeral services. When we argue and I retreat to my room - she starts singing those songs!! And I know it ain’t for** her!**

I am wondering–what do you mean by the fact that he was christened in another faith? Is not christening the same as baptism? If he was baptized in another Christian denomination using the proper matter (water) and the proper words (I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit), then he is already validly baptized and would not need to be baptized in order to be received into the Catholic Church.

You’re right. In most Christian denominations when a child is christened they are baptized shortly after. Not the case here though. He was what they call “dedicated”. And thats what i should have stated in my previous post. Having you’re child christened in the Church I was at then, is not exactly the same as christened in the Catholic faith. He was anointed with oil and prayed over, by a pastor. And yes he was anointed in the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. That was right after his birth and before my personal conversion to Catholicism. I did not have him baptized or emerged in water as I left the church shortly after.

In any case, he does need to be baptized. And I think that is a different topic all together. I’m more concerned about his mother practicing voodoo at this point.

I’m shocked - SHOCKED - that some are just blowing this off.

Please take a bit to watch this, and understand why it is so very dangerous to be messing with such things: Casting Spells
