Help! Sin encouragement a mortal sin

So today someone was getting worried because they had misplaced some sheet music that they needed for the next week and couldn’t remember whether they had given it to the organiser or not.
In an attempt to calm them, I said ‘just tell them that you gave it in’.
Realising that I had effectively encouraged them to lie, I then said that it was best not to lie because it would lead to a bad situation.
This person did not lie (well I guess they didn’t know whether it would be a lie or not since they couldn’t remember) but I still feel really guilty.

Is this a mortal sin? I had good intentions and corrected myself afterwards but, nevertheless I encouraged someone to sin!

Any help would be much appreciated.

I would say no - 3 criteria need to be *simultaneously *present to make it a mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge it is a grave matter, and full consent to the sin in the light of that knowledge.

Going by your account, as soon as you realised what you had said quite casually you checked yourself and corrected the other person, so no harm done, no grave matter. It’s not like you were thinking very deviously in advance about telling the lie.

No mortal sin committed once the criteria are applied.
