My brothers and sisters,
I have been struggling for over a decade with sins against purity. This has been a long up hill battle that I just cannot seem to win. I am in Confession weekly. I succumb to it so easily. I fight it but the temptation seems to persist no matter what I employ. I am rarely in a state of grace. I HATE this. I am in counseling but I fall again and again. I am tempted to despair. Because I am so seldom in a state of grace, I feel none of my works are ever pleasing to the Lord. I work quite a lot and cannot get to Confession for sometimes days at a time. And even then, I fall again only a day or two later. I want to make Him happy, but I am such a terrible servant. I am near tears as I type this. Even now, I experience temptations. PLEASE pray for me that this Lent I may beat this once and for all.

Fasting and abstinence will greatly reduce these temptations.

My 2 cents:

Pop Culture’s 1 - 2 punch is: 1. choosing comfort for self means ignoring learning God’s sacrificial laws and plans to serve OTHERS, and 2. Sex primarily for pleasure via Birth Control instead of primarily for love, pleasure and procreation. Our society was once forced into INVOLUNTARY sacrificial living due to the struggle for survival coupled with parental discipline to learn God’s laws and no birth control. Today, we have enough wealth and VOLUNTARY free will to please primarily self, so many people are asking via free will, why follow God’s sacrificial laws if I don’t have to?

Maturity involves transitioning from childhood (where self is first and others are second) to Catholic adulthood (where we lay down our lives for our spouses, kids, work, i.e. OTHERS come first, and self comes second). Many parents think they’re helping their kids by giving them a soft, comfortable life with maximum entertainment and minimal pain. Naturally, no child wants to grow up and volunteer to be second after being first for so long. Society is no longer struggling for survival, as it was in the farm society we used to have pre-50 years ago, so there aren’t enough chores to force kids to work hard and sacrifice for others in a standard home situation. It’s our job to raise adults, not kids. Kids need to be given duties and responsibilities to train them to struggle, succeed, and sacrifice for others, as well as have fun with parents so they’ll be less likely to rebel. Other churches have borrowed a pop culture media seduction to get kids interested, where ours is more rooted in a tradition of deep solemnity of prayer, which is in stark contrast to all the flashing lights and the minimal attention span that media provides for them until their next expected immediate stimulation. We expect them to follow our deep tradition, but there’s not enough patience for them to get deep when pop culture media has conditioned them to adopt flashing lights and the immediate gratification of visual stimulation. Them asking the “why” questions poses a problem for older Catholics because we didn’t doubt our Catholicism and didn’t challenge it. I’ve found that the answers to all the “WHYS” can be found in Leo Trese’s “The Faith Explained.” It should be required reading for ALL Catholics, in my opinion. We will continue to lose more members and kids than necessary if we cannot answer the whys. We will continue to struggle to raise kids in our Faith, to be unselfish givers, as long as they are exposed to shallow pop culture media that promotes lust and self to be more important than true, romantic, deep, sacrificial love. We need to bring back the romance. If pop culture prevents us form this life, then we need to decrease our exposure to it.

Choice #1: If one chooses to give one’s life to the Church’s way of sacrificial, true love for spouse and kids, one can experience the True love that makes one’s heart sing and will rock you to the depths of your bones. Deep, romantic, sacrificial, True Love via God’s Covenant for man and woman is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. This life seems hard due to duty, responsibility, and fortitude, but appreciation, virtue and character formation are the rewards.

Choice #2: If one chooses a life of selfish indulgence of the basic instincts, one will walk around like a person with a teaspoon and a sugar bowl: dipping the teaspoon into the sugar bowl frequently, taking a sweet lick that doesn’t last, constantly searching for the next temporary high via sex, drugs, materialism, extreme vanity, gambling, food, pursuit of trying to invent something artificially different for the few seconds of shallow amusement it provides, to no long term satisfaction. The search continues indefinitely, always believing that peace and satisfaction will be coming soon. There IS NO LONG-TERM FUTURE SATISFACTION IN THE PURSUIT OF THIS TYPE OF LIFESTYLE. Placing oneself at the center of the universe in the constant pursuit of self-comfort and self-pleasure is not the answer. It becomes an egomaniacal mini god-complex where it becomes too easy to blame others when one won’t find peace, satisfaction, and romantic joy. This life seems hard, mostly out of boredom and unfulfilling shallowness.

Now, we need to educate more Men and Women in the Way and get them to see that everyone will need to eventually choose PRIMARILY #1 and secondarily #2, or PRIMARILY #2 and secondarily #1 above. The primary will guide their life’s direction. Then, more men and women will choose to commit to the deep beauty and romanticism of God’s Way.

Well, I hope this helps. 🤷

One small act that can only help is the three Hail Marys. St Alphonsus Liguori said to say three Hail Marys in the morning and evening. After each Hail Mary, add: “By thy pure and Immaculate Conception, O Mary, make my body pure and my soul holy.”

O Blessed Mother, please aid this poor soul who struggles against that which we all face in today’s world - fleshly temptations. Let your purity be an example and inspiration to all who suffer in this way. Please comfort and console us in our afflictions, and bring our needs before your Son.

Amen
:highprayer:

I’m sorry you’re struggling… remember how merciful Our Lord is. Don’t despair… sometimes sin is like that, and it takes us years if not our whole life to overcome it. Maybe this is a cross to bear. The fact that you’re repentant means SO much. God always takes us back when we repent of our sins… try to make the resolution to not give in to this sin anymore (even if you know this will be really difficult and you aren’t sure you’ll make it) - and take specific steps to avoid occasions of sin… be devoted to our Blessed Mother and surround yourself with holy images, sacramentals, etc. Use holy water… also I’ve heard that in sins against purity, it doesn’t help to fight the temptation directly. Rather, try to distract yourself. I’ll pray for you…

God is Merciful to the Good Fighter
George Kalpouzos

A monk, as Saint Amphilochios relates, fell into fornication. From then on, he committed the same sin every day. Each time after the sin, he prayed with tears in his eyes for Jesus Christ to have mercy on him. Blinded by this bad habit, he committed the sin repeatedly. Immediately he rushed to the church, knelt in front of the icon of Christ and said with tears in his eyes, “Have mercy on me, oh Lord, and take away from me this temptation that makes me suffer and wounds my soul. I can’t see your face so that my soul can find peace.” After he said these words and left the church, he committed the same sin again. He didn’t lose hope for his salvation and he came back to the church praying the same way to the merciful God: “You are my witness, oh Lord, that from now on I will never commit this sin again. Oh loving God, forgive me for my past up to this moment for I have hurt You.” He committed “his lovely” sin again. His spiritual struggle lasted ten years.

Behold, the endless mercy of our Master and Lord Jesus Christ!

Finally, one day this monk committed the same sin. He rushed to the church weeping, crying and praying with tears in his eyes to the merciful God.

When the devil saw the persistent repentance of the monk, he appeared bodily in front of the monk and with wrath questioned God saying:

“Why do You accept this licentious and prodigal man who lies to You every day? Why don’t You cast him into fire? You are merciful to put up with him. You are not a righteous judge, but a one-sided one. You threw me down from heaven for just one sin of arrogance, but You forgive this perpetual lying, licentious and prodigal man because he cries before You. Where is Your righteousness?”

Then the voice of the Lord was heard from the altar saying:

“Evil and unclean spirit, aren’t you yet satisfied to lead the world into perdition? Do you want to grasp also him who bows before My mercy? Can you hold so many sins against him that they counter My Holy Blood that I have shed on the Cross for him? When he commits a sin, you don’t send him away but accept him happily. And you don’t discourage him for YOU wish to gain him. As I am merciful and have befriended man, how can you expect Me not to show mercy on him who draws near Me in repentance? I will never reject him until he becomes My heir. I was crucified for sinners and to save everyone who comes to Me.”

As soon as the devil heard the voice of the Lord, he started trembling, unable to move or say a word.

“Listen carefully, devilish spirit, who calls Me unjust. I am all righteous. I will judge each one under the circumstances he is in. Behold, I will save his soul and accept him who recently returned to me in repentance and contrition because he didn’t despair, but rather struggled for his salvation.”

At that time, the monk gave up his soul.

My beloved readers, do you understand how ineffable is God’s love and immeasurable is His mercy? Let us not neglect our salvation. Watch out not to fall into despair.

Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

I can offer advice here. I would first reccomend trying some sort of long, contemplative prayer, such as the rosary. Then, find some non-sinful way to distract yourself. Don’t put yourself in to tempting situations either.

Prodigal

Father, like the prodigal son, I squander gifts of my eternal inheritance. Like him, I spiral into deprivation and alienation.

Yet the ‘prodigal son’ possessed something that I do not. He bore memories of his father, his loving home and his former comfort. I have no memories of You, only hearsay and promises, books and teachings. I have no memories of my heavenly home, only those of my life upon earth with its pleasures and its sorrows.

Would I, knowing God, have departed from You and our home? Yet I do not know You and I often depart from You. In my humiliation, I return to You, still incapable of appreciating Your love.

Hungry and desperate, I stumble towards You with little merit in my return. I carefully formulate my entreaty upon Your mercy, saying, “Father, I am not worthy to be Your child. Let me be as a hired servant that I may eat, drink, and have shelter, and that my wounds may heal, and I may live.”

I cannot comprehend the depth of Your parental love for me. Scripture assures me of Your unconditional love, yet in my repentance as in my disobedience, I am ignoble still. Because of Your nature and in spite of mine, I call upon Your merciful love. Let me become, and remain, worthy of such a Father.

Temptations: loving solutions

Loving God, You do not wish us to succumb to sin, guilt or anxiety. You wish us to hope in Your mercy. When we are tempted against goodness, please unfold loving solutions in us through wisdom, trust, prayer and thanksgiving.

In temptations against charity, let us invite You to love through us aptly and sensitively.
In doubt or discouragement, let us affirm faith.

Let temptations of pride remind us that we are called to serve each other in mutual charity. Let temptations against humility and obedience cause us to rejoice that God Incarnate obeyed humbly for our sakes.

In temptations against purity of intention, inspire us to focus our hearts and minds on You, in order to share in Your divine life, in harmony with everyone who seeks God.

In temptations against chastity, fill us with respect — for where others attract us, we honour You who love them. Let each temptation against chastity become the joyful victory of Your love in souls moving towards You in spiritual company of loved fellow humans!

Loving God, in our temptations let us be trusting and peaceful, for You are God who loves us. Let the loving solutions that You offer us in our difficulties, serve to recreate and unite us in the communion of Saints and Angels. Let goodness be wrought out of all temptation so that Your kingdom triumphs before everything that seeks its destruction.

Grant me Your Spirit

Holy Spirit, I need wisdom, discernment and unconditional love. Will You share Yours with me? Help me to persevere in these necessary virtues, even where there is wounding within me greater than anyone is aware. Help me to carry my daily responsibilities with faith, purity, and hope.
I need healing for injuries and scars that prevent me from fully becoming the person I am created to be. Come into my mind and soul, and help me through the rest of my life.

I need You, Holy Spirit. Please access the gifts and beauty of my unique creation in God’s image. For others’ benefit and for Your glory, give me a deep appreciation and use of the goodness, loveliness joy and blessing of this creation that You mean me to be.

“Pray for a strong spirit, the Spirit of God. And thank God often for yourself, for His gift to you.” Priest in Confession, Divine Mercy Sunday
