My husband and I never had any training on Natural Family Planning. Now we have two very young children, and, because of our children, we cannot attend NFP training classes (We cannot get a babysitter for the number of times it would take to complete a class. We do not have any training courses within an hour drive. And I am breastfeeding a baby who will NOT take a bottle, so I am unable to leave my baby for long periods of time). Any suggestions? I am open to having more children; I just want to be prepared when/if NFP becomes necessary. Thanks!

Most NFP methods have online or distance teaching options. Ask for these options.

If your cycle is quite regular and you get given easy to read signs when you are ovulating, it’s quite easy to learn by yourself. I have an app on my phone where I chart my monthly cycle and my ovulation date. I don’t measure body temperature and don’t check secretions consistency. After about 6months of recording so it could get decent averages. It is now pretty much spot on when I start periods and when I ovulate (occasionally it will be a days different)

The app is called my cycles - it’s a pink flower picture thing.

If you aren’t regular or don’t have such easy to read signs, then it will be more tricky, but not impossible. There is lots of information online as well which talks of all the signs etc to record and chart.

I’m assuming you know the basics? but if you know the date you ovulate, it’s that day and 6 days before that you want to avoid having sexual relations. If you don’t know the basics and have any questions, send me a message! I’m happy to talk in more details!

By the way…while I don’t really see the difference between the toe as they both chart the same signs and symptoms, I think most would consider what I do as the rhythm method as opposed to NFP but it will certainly help in the meantime.

There is a huge difference between NFP methods based on observation of fertility signs and cycle averages.

Creighton, Billings, Sympto-Thermal, and Marquette are the four main methods relying on daily observation of symptoms. They all offer distance options, to my knowledge.

The OP is breastfeeding, she will need special instruction.

I learned Creighton after my last was born. I would take baby with me:shrug:

The instructor worked from my OBs office.

My ob would get a chance to see him. And my instructor didn’t mind at all.

Baby was usually nicely behaved.

Couple to Couple League has training you do from home.
This! My DW and I just completed the home study course and this was the first NFP class we ever took. Took about six hours total and it was the best decision we ever made. You’ll feel good again once you go through the training materials. It’s really not that complicated and if you have questions the CCLI folks will be very helpful.

I was searching for answers too and one of the post suggested app to help track bbt.

I started using the Kindara app about a year ago. They have a vast amount of knowledge base and their app is so easy to use and so simple to read. Not only am I tracking to avoid pregnancy, but it has empowered me to understand my body in so many ways.

They just launch a new wireless thermometer to make it even easier.
