So I visited the nursing home with the Legion of Mary today, and this resident really gave it to us when she found out we were Catholic. She didn’t ask us to leave, but she made it clear that we “were wrong” and that she followed true Christianity.

Anyways, she asked me two questions that I thought I answered sufficiently, but she wanted more proof. They were:
  1. Proof of the Trinity. I cited John 8:58 but she didn’t accept that. Are there any other verses that I can use?
  2. She said that Jesus never said we would go to heaven; that man was made for Earth. I cited John 14:2 but again, this was not enough to convince her.
I’m not necessarily going to go back to the nursing home and pick a fight with the woman, but I would like to have “backup” proof for the future.

Thanks.

Sounds like a Jehovah witness to me. I suggest some reading here it has a lot of good info. Also the library here has a wealth of information. I hope this helps.

Just curious: what leads you to believe she was a Jehovah’s Witness? She wouldn’t tell me what her denomination was and maybe this is why. But really curious to hear how you came up with this. 🙂

Jehovah witnesses believe that except for the 144 thousand elders or whatever they call them go to Heaven , mans Heaven is here on earth. Plus “their Watchtower Society insists that the Trinity is unbiblical and false, they relegate the Holy Spirit to the role of God’s impersonal active force which compels believers to do his will. In fact, they compare the Holy Spirit (which they render as “holy spirit”) to electricity”. This last sentence was taken from the link I provided earlier.

Where do they get this number from? Is there any Biblical proof for this claim?

Thanks for your help.

I think she must have been a JW (or someone who reads a lot of their stuff), because the denial of the trinity and the belief in a “paradise earth” are pretty much hallmarks of their belief system.

God in Three Persons (Fathers*) The Trinity (Fathers*)

THE TRINITY (This Rock: July 1991)
Sorry, JWs: The early Christians were Trinitarians.

For next time you may want to get into these articles a bit because they deal with that belief too.

Here is the search results from the CA online library.

They get it from misinterpreting Revelation 7:1-8 and 14:1-5

I hope all that helps a bit.

She fits the description of a JW to a “T”. Another sure way is if she believes that Christmas, Christmas trees and birthdays are all “pagan”.

It’s hard to reason with the JWs as they have been taught that everything you say is a lie. Good luck.

She is definitely a Jehovahs Witness. I have dealt/witnessed with them for the past thirty-some-odd years. I have a paper that addresses and answers these questions/comments, if you are interested.

The key issue with JWs is authority. JWs who are prone to thinking and asking real questions don’t remain JWs. Those who do, do so because they have made the decision to let the Watchtower Society do their thinking for them. If WT literature says the sky is red, it does little good for you to point and say, “Look, it’s blue!” The WTS says it, they believe it and that settles it. In fact they are taught that to doubt any WTS pronoucement even secretly in their heart is to jeopardize their salvation. It’s a movement fuelled by fear and anger. And BTW, the WTS has in common with hardcore secularists a special hatred for the Catholic Church.

I don’t endorse everything on this site, but there is some good info on what makes JWs tick. The site’s main operator used to work at WTS headquarters and has a unique insider’s perspective.
