Pope Benedict XV, writing in Spiritus Paraclitus quoted Pope Leo XIII: “how insistently men fight against us; You know the arms and arts they rely upon.” [Paragraph 39] Leo XIII supposedly wrote those words in the encyclical Providentissimus Deus. The quote has a footnote, [68], which simply reads: Leo XIII, Providentissimus Deus; cf. Ench. Bibl., n. 100. I looked up Providentissimus Deus and I can’t find the quote cited by Benedict XV.
The closest I could find in Providentissimus Deus was this line in paragraph 10:
“But first it must be clearly understood whom we have to oppose and contend against, and what are their tactics and their arms.”
Questions from a Catholic dullard:
In this case, was the translation of the Latin into English marred when Benedict XV quoted Leo XIII?
Footnote 68 from Spiritus Paraclitus refers to Ench. Bibl., n. 100. What is Ench. Bibl. and is the quote above-mentioned found in that document?
Your help appreciated. BTW these encyclicals along with Divino Afflante Spiritu are found in my Baronius Press DR Bible.
