A couple of young people from my parish and me decided we should start some sort of a group for young catholics that want to help people in need, such as old sick people, poor families etc., who live on the territory of our parish.
In our country volunteer work is not as developed and appreciated as it is in the Western Europe and the US, so we don’t have much idea on how we could start this program.
So, I would kindly ask you to post some links, if you know of some catholic youth groups whose primary goal is serving the community, so we could copy-paste their ideas 🙂

Catholic Action comes to mind, used to be very active in Italy and other countries, is it still around? Legion of Mary is another group that may help you establish what you have in mind.

Sounds like you have the ideas but you need to get approval for anything you do from your pastor don’t you? Maybe you should set up a meeting with him and the ones you know that are interested. Then maybe he can gather the materials and check with his insurance plan if needed? I’m sure there are some liability things he may want to consider if it’s a youth group representing the church?

We weren’t going for anything big. Of course we’ll discuss everything with our pastor, but we won’t engage in anything special - we thought about collecting things for the poor, visiting old people and helping them around, helping schoolchildren with homework and things like that. The thing is, our pastor is great, but he doesn’t usually initiate things. When we want/need something, we have to be concrete with him and come with specific demands. That’s why we need to plan first, and then fill him in with what we came up with.

I’ll browse the internet for more info on Catholic Action and Legion of Mary. I even think there is Legion of Mary in our country.
Thanks!

Good luck!

One of the things our parish offers is driving the elderly to doctor appointments. Some just don’t have the finances and/or ability to get themselves there. I think this is a really beautiful thing to do.
