Help with a quote from Cardinal Newman

Somewhere I read a reply by Cardinal John Henry Newman to an attack on Catholic devotion to Our Blessed Mother that went something like this—I know tht those across The Channel have maintained devotion to Mary and have kept their faith while we have not and seemed to have lost ours. I read *An Essay on the Development of Christioan Doctrine *and skimmed Apologia Pro Vita Sua, but looking back I can’t find the quote. Is anyone aware of it?

I am not aware of any quote of his which says that - but I would be very happy to be corrected.

Are you possibly referring to this, from the Apologia, which refers to continental devotion to Mary, but not in the way implied by your words?

Such devotional manifestations in honour of our Lady had been my great crux as regards Catholicism; I say frankly, I do not fully enter into them now; I trust I do not love her the less, because I cannot enter into them. They may be fully explained and defended; but sentiment and taste do not run with logic: they are suitable for Italy, but they are not suitable for England.

Still, I’m hoping that someone can find a quote closer to your original.

I’ve read quite a bit of his works, but sadly this quote doesn’t ring a bell. I did a search on the Newman Reader and didn’t come with anything quite on the mark. Blessed John Henry uses the term “channel” so often it didn’t narrow down as much as I’d hoped!

Currently, I’m reading “Present Position of Catholics in England” and haven’t come across this (up to Lecture VI). I’m wondering, could it be in the “Letter to Pusey”? That was his reply to Pusey’s Eirenicon, but I haven’t read it yet:

Perhaps you were thinking of this quote in Development, Ch 11:

And if we take a survey at least of Europe, we shall find that it is not those religious communions which are characterized by devotion towards the Blessed Virgin that have ceased to adore her Eternal Son, but those very bodies, (when allowed by the law,) which have renounced devotion to her. The regard for His glory, which was professed in that keen jealousy of her exaltation, has not been supported by the event. They who were accused of worshipping a creature in His stead, still worship Him; their accusers, who hoped to worship Him so purely, they, wherever obstacles to the development of their principles have been removed, have ceased to worship Him altogether.
