I was debating the idea that Pregnancy is a not a risk factor for the mother and should not be used as an argument for abortion

Could someone provide me with some information to refute these claims? Evidence that supports the opposite would also help.

The leading cause of death for 15- to 19-year-old girls worldwide is complications from pregnancy and child-bearing. According to public-health experts, for every girl that dies during pregnancy or childbirth, 30 more will suffer injuries, infections and disabilities. And the risks are not limited to the mother: If a girl is under the age of 18 when she gives birth, her baby’s chance of dying in its first year of life is 60 percent higher than that of a baby born to an older mother. Moreover, the extended reproductive span of a girl who is married early puts her and her children at risk due to a greater number of pregnancies and deliveries. According to one study, women who marry before age 19 will have two to four times more children than those who marry after age 25.
The additional burden of obstetric fistula
One of the most physically and psychologically debilitating effects of early child-bearing is fistula, a rupture of tissue that results in an opening between the vagina and the bladder or the rectum, or both, which is reparable only with surgery. Primarily caused by obstructed labour, fistula is closely linked to marriage and child-bearing among girls between 10 and 15 years of age. In one 1995 study in Niger, for example, 88 percent of women with fistula were in this age group when they were married. As will all pregnancy-related injuries, young married girls in resource-poor settings are least likely to get treatment for fistula. With leaking urine and feces, a malodorous girl suffering an untreated fistula is likely to be ostracized by her community and divorced

Psalm 139:13-16 (New International Version)

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

The whole argument is invalid because it uses the fallacy of generalization.

Yes, I agree … it is a wonderful example of the old adage “Statistics don’t lie but liers use statistics” …

NARAl and Planned Parenthood often times have their members write letters to the editors or Editorial Boards write editorials that state that “Abortion is safer then carrying a child to term because the death rate for child birth is higher than abortion” … or something like that … but that looks at only a part of the eaquation … a look that de-humanizes the child and nullifies the meaning of motherhood …

For example only … if one out of a thousand abortions resulted in a womans death and five deliveries out of a thousand resulted in the mothers dying the abortion industry would tell you it was safer to abort the child than deliver …

In reality the statistics really would show something more like this:

1000 abortions, one maternal death and 998 child deaths
[which would equate to 999 human lives lost to death - 1001 left living for about 50% death rate]

1000 deliveries, five maternal deaths, and perhaps 3 child deaths
[which equates to 8 deaths and 1992 left alive for a death rate of 1%]

World wide statistics are probelamtic becuase they fail to take into account variable that affect the statistics … like the numbers of maternal/child deaths during deliveries that occurred to refugees who fled war torn areas and suffred other traumas that impacted the safety of the pregancy anddellivery …

The answer is not killing the unborn child anymore than it is prohibiting marriage. The answer is in providing better health care.

Are you seriously trying to argue that being pregnant does not cause any health risks for the woman?

One example of adverse health effects from pregnancy will invalidate your argument.

Maybe you mean something different?

How about not making love until marriage, and being ready and willing to have a child, instead of wrecklessly going out and having sex then getting rid of the “stress” growing inside the woman–the human being in development.

Abortion undermines and destroys both the sacredness of children and motherhood, and is unnatural. The only time I believe it acceptable is if the pregnacy is life-threatening to the mother, then it should come to her choice.

You didn’t answer my question - Are you trying to argue that being pregnant does not cause any health risks for the woman?

I gathered that this is the case from your words: “Pregnancy is a not a risk factor for the mother”

How about the fact that every mother does not die in childbirth…

Example…

My grandmother had 14 children and did not die.

My mom had 4 children and did not die.

I had 5 children and did not die.

My sisters each had 6 children and did not die.

Oh yes we were all under the age of 18 when we started our families except one sister.

I’m sure you can look around and see alot of mothers who did not die from childbirth. And use them as a visual and not some number on paper.
