Help with Aramaic

Hi all,

i’ve just joined this forum to ask for some information really. I had a translation from English to aramaic some 10 years ago and i unfortunately lost the translation before i could put it to the use i wanted it for. So again i am looking again. Does anybody know where i may be able to get an accurate translation?

I would like part of Luke 17:21 translated "For behold, the kingdom of God is among you.” if possible.

I also previously asked for the name Nicholas to be translated if possible, which if i remember correctly there was something similar in the language. For me to prompt this request after all this time, i am also asking for a translation of the name Mary.

This is for a personal project to allow me to honour the memory of 2 important people in my life. I would appreciate any information you may be able to provide.

Sorry not me, but the second link might help more.

Maybe someone else can read Aramaic? I know there are a few modern speakers in Israel still, although the language may have changed a little.

You have certainly given me a point in the right direction, i know it took me a couple of months previously, but with the web these days im sure its alot easier. thank you again.

The poster put up Amharic, which is the language of modern Ethiopia, derived from Ge’ez. Although it is a Semitic language like Aramaic, it’s not the same thing. You’re probably going to want to look for the Syriac Peshitta.

Yes, sorry my mistake. I thought there used to be an Aramaic bible on that site.
 
I believe the Chaldean Catholic Church still use the Aramaic language in the Mass, and they are united to Rome so I am sure there must be some members here?
There is a contingent here in our city that have come from Iraq and have been given a parish here by the Bishop to use on Sundays as they only have a few dozen members.

I apologize if my assumption is incorrect, but it seems you are looking to support the hypothesis that the translation should be “The Kingdom of God is within you” rather than “The kingdom of God is among you”.

If so, here is an article from The Journal of Syriac Studies on the subject that supports the former rather than the latter, and also provides many possible Aramaic renderings beyond the Peshitta, which can use more ambiguous prepositions than other versions of Aramaic…syrcom.cua.edu/Hugoye/Vol12No2/HV12N2Ramelli.pdf

The NAB renders the latter, while many others (including DR translates as the former).

In case you are interested, the Latin is:

Ecce enim regnum Dei intra vos est,

and the Greek renders:

ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ ἐντὸς ὑμῶν ἐστιν.
