Help with buying a new Bible

Congrats on your journey home!!!

I’m sure you’ll get a lot of opinions on which bible … and its an often asked question. Here’s my :twocents::

I have a NAB, and its dusty, hardly ever use it. I prefer the RSV-CE translation. Its very ‘readable’, its my daily fix. However, I find myself going to a Douay-Rheims quite often, particularly when a verse is hard to understand. I also use the non-Catholic KJV with the apocrypha for reference, it is very similar to the DR. Also use a very old confraternity bible we have for reference. So, you see, one bible translation may not be an end-all for your needs!

Best answer though is buy a bible that you’ll read! And that often comes down to print size & type, book size, paper quality, cover options, thumb indexed or not, red letter or not, price, ribbon bookmarks, etc etc etc. Find a Catholic gift/book store in your area, good way to spend lots of time checking the different versions out! And most of the shopowners will be thrilled to help you & offer their opinion too!
 
Bryan - I, too, would recommend the RSV-CE if you’re making a purchase in the near future.

If you have some time to wait, though, I would HIGHLY recommend occasionally checking out the beautiful Bibles on www.baroniuspress.com (I got my Douay-Rheims from Baronius Press, and it is beautiful). Because they should soon (was supposed to be done by the end of 2008) be finishing up with their release of *The Knox Bible, *also sometimes referred to as *The Holy Bible: A Translation From the Latin Vulgate in the Light of the Hebrew and Greek Originals. *It was completed by convert and Monsignor Ronald Knox in 1945 (New Testament) and 1950 (Old Testament), I believe. Baronius Press describes it as a “. . . marvellous translation . . . now recognised as one of the high water marks of pre-conciliar Catholicism” and “a doctrinally sound and edifying translation that is highly recommended for all Catholics.”

I first checked it out at the recommendation of Karl Keating. It is excellent.

Thanks! I think I will go with the RSV-CE. I grew up with the RSV so it will probably be easier for me. I would go get it now but the store is without power from the ice storm. Thanks again!
 
I would go with the NAB. The RSV-CE makes me feel so uncomfortable reading it except for a few verses. Personally, I recommend the Douay-Rheims. I too have bought mine at Baronius Press. Which Bible you choose depends on your reading style. The Douay-Rheims just happens to be mine, it may or may not be right for you.

You won’t regret it. The RSV-CE is my main Bible that I read. My wife got me a Douay-Rheims that I will also sometimes read but of all the different translations that I own I always find myself going back to the RSV-CE 👍
