Help with confession, please

It’s been a long time since I went to confession (it was never really stressed as very important when I was younger). After participating in the forum and renewing my faith, I’m finally making myself go this afternoon.

Since the last time I went was over 7 years ago, I’m not really that familiar with the procedure anymore. Can anybody kind of walk me through it? I’m really nervous…

You must not worry so much about proper format. You can simply tell the Priest you need some help getting back into the swing of it, and he will most certainly help you along with it. You can be totally honest about it and fear nothing in this regard.

God be with you. I am so very happy you are going to do this.

I really hope you will see how this sacrament will strengthen your faith, and provide you much grace.

Definitely pray deeply as you prepare. Don’t rush the preparation. It could take a couple of weeks if you’re really preparing what I call a “landmark” confession.

Review the “elephants” in your life – the sins you KNOW you need to confess, and then drill down to the underlying motivations for the drearyl, common everyday sins you may not even be aware of. Ask God to show you everything with his eyes: eyes of perfect Truth. And if the going gets tough, when you get to the confessional if you are tempted to chicken out, ask Jesus to make the confession for you. He will.

Don’t worry so much about format. There is hardly any format anymore! The guides others have given will be fine.

Don’t be a stranger to the sacrament any more - once every month (or possibly twice) is advisable. Personally I like going every first Friday so I’m ready to receive Communion on First Friday AND First Saturday.

You had a lot of people praying for you. Whenever a rabid Protestant starts to beat me up over Sacramental Confession, I just give 'em my biggest smile and say: “Man! It’s the second best thing about being CATHOLIC!”
