Hello,

I am a college student in my second year. I’m finding some problems with my prayer life, as in almost not having it there at all. I used to be so into my faith and so into prayer multiple times a day, and right now it seems so dry and I just seem to keep putting it off and not praying at all or reading Scripture. I used to pray the rosary every day and read Scripture and all of this stuff, and now I don’t feel the fire to do that anymore for some reason

I’m just wanting to know if anyone has any tips or words of advice to help me get back into a daily track of prayer and Scripture reading, and juggle this with a busy college schedule.

Thank you!

Been there. My advice for you is to treat it like homework. Decide what you are going to do (rosary/read Scripture, etc) and then do it every day, whether you feel like it or not. Do it for a week. Then evaluate and add or subtract devotions as needed, but always trying to spend at least twenty minutes a day with God. The feeling wxes and wanes, but will come back again. Trust me.

This happens to me too. Tired, busy…and to be honest, I just don’t feel like praying. Sometimes it’s hard to persevere. When this happens to me, I am honest and just tell God how I’m feeling. I simply ask Him for the grace of perseverance.

It happens to everybody in their life. Maybe try cutting down on the number of prayers you are saying for a while and simply talk to God from your heart. Tell Him about your day (good and bad) and ask Him for for His love and mercy. Just tell him you love Him and thank Him for all he does for you.

Some of the best and most powerful prayers are the ones that come from the heart.

After some time you will be back in your normal routine.

God Bless

Not sure what you do, but consider a few things (varies from person to person)

Same prayers/words every day (i.e. no variety)?
Taking on too much at a time?

I’ve been through that and I didn’t really last very long. Until I found what I do now that has pretty much become an “addiction” of sorts to the point that, with the exception of a few days here and there, is a daily routine.

The Divine Office.

It’s just me, but I find myself running to it (sometimes with effort), including and especially during dry times.

However we do mental prayer, we can be sure of encountering difficulties. Some have already been mentioned: dryness, distaste, a sense of our own worthlessness, the feeling the effort to pray is useless.

The first thing to say about such difficulties is that they should not come as a surprise or cause us to worry or be upset. Not only are they inevitable, they are actually good for us. They purify our love for God and strengthen our faith.

I’m a sophomore, too, and yes sometimes it can be difficult to “find the time” to pray and be with God, but to be honest we really just have to will it and understand hat it is something we have to do. Obviously, you want to spend time with God, and so, even if you do so for 5 brief minutes in your dorm room, then that’s good. God just wants to see that you’re making an effort to be with him.

I believe Saint Francis de Sales once said that we should pray at least 15 minutes each day and when we’re busy, even more!

May God bless you always! 🙂

“There is a beautiful supplication, a quick prayer that our Lord gave to Sister Maria [Consolata] Betrone. It says-** ‘Jesus and Mary, I love You. Save souls.’** It is very simple, but oh it carries a lot of weight.” -Mother M Angelica of EWTN

I have been pushed away from the Church so many times. It affects my daily prayer.

The past week was the last week of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The diocese website listed 8 pilgrimage churches, where the special plenary indulgences could be obtained.

I’ve mostly ignored YOM but I decided to go to one of these churches for prayer. The holy door was closed and locked. And, THAT was unexpected, because the diocesan website stated that all the pilgrimage churches would be open “through the remainder of the Jubilee Year.” The other closest church was the diocesan cathedral church, but I already knew that was closed months earlier for remodeling.

And, it also happens that our local bishop had taken a ten-day holiday with a local group to Italy, and made four processional entries to holy doors, which were NOT locked.

this disturbs my prayer life, more than it should, but it greatly disturbs me. Based on this and other experiences, I still think for me the best prayer is private prayer in my home (I live alone).

There’s nothing wrong with praying when you first awaken and before you go to sleep.
The Lord expects you to make good use of your educational opportunities.
There’s a great website: www.sacredspace.ie that has a daily 5 minute meditation.
You might make time for that…

God bless you!
