Hello Everyone…

Last night in my RCIA class, we were talking about the Pope and the Deacon (he was giving the class) brought up the fact that there have been 5 Dogmas from the Pope in the last 2,000 years. He said the last one was the Immaculate Conception of Mary, someone asked what the other 4 were and we were unable to find them. I have tried to find them online and can’t. If anyone knows what they are, Please Help.

Thank You in Advance,

Are you sure they didn’t say there are 5 “Marian” dogmas?

Immaculate Conception
Perpetual Virginity
Assumption
Mary, Mother of God
Mary, Mother of the Church

the last has not been infallibly proclaimed, but these Marian dogmas are not the only infallible teaching of the Church.

I am positive 🙂 He said that there were only 5 Dogmas in the last 2,000 years. I seriously have looked EVERYWHERE on the net and can’t find them. I am wondering if maybe the wrong wording was used or something. I am going to continue to do some research on this, I will post anything I come up with.

Thank you both for the replies, I was starting to wonder if my question had no answer.

The statement doesn’t quite fit.

If you mean dogmas the POPE has personally infallibly proclaimed, then there are only two that everyone agrees were exercises of the Pope’s personal charism of infallibility - the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption. And probably two others that almost all agree on - which are the teachings on contraception and the ordination of women.

If you mean how many Marian dogmas there are in TOTAL (including those proclaimed by Church Ecumenical COUNCILS which are also infallible) - then there are four:
  1. Mary Mother of God
  2. Mary’s Perpetual Virginity
  3. Immaculate Conception
  4. Assumption
There has been debate recently about a proposed new dogma of ‘Mary Co-Redemptrix’, but that is NOT dogma yet - and it doesn’t look like it’s likely to become dogma in the near future.

But if you’re thinking of TOTAL infallibly-proclaimed dogmas - there are many many many, a few proclaimed by Popes personally, most by Councils. Things like:

Papal Infallibility
The Trinity (in fact all the beliefs contained in the Nicene Creed, which was written by the Council of Nicea)
The dogmas that Christ was one person and had two natures (one human and the other divine)
Transubstantiation
Teachings on the sacraments coming from the Council of Trent

are all dogmas.

Thank you Lily, I actually just placed a call to my RCIA leader, to clarify. I am SOOO confused. From what I have found today, and what I am getting here it sounds like maybe he was referring to Marian Dogmas.

I found a list of 254 Dogmas of the Catholic Faith.

Lots more than 5 for sure.

😉 😛

Could somebody check this type of dogma?

Apparently, the Pope can issue a dogma, on his own, ex cathedra. If that is so, then there are very few such dogmas.

He also issues dogma, ex cathedra in conjunction with the bishops.

Was it Vatican 1 that defined infallibility?

Hello Everyone…

Thank You in Advance,
They are not all “from the Pope”.

The five Marian Dogmas:

The last one was not the Immaculate Conception.

The Last was the Assumption of Mary

Next the** Immaculate Conception**

The other ones are the Perpetual Virginity of Mary

That Mary is the Mother of God

? I’m drawing a blank ??

First, we should consider what constitutes a dogma.

A. the solemn definitions of a Pope (under papal infallibility)
B. the solemn definitions of an Ecumenical Council
C. infallible teachings of the Universal Magisterium

If we say only A. and B., then Mary’s perpetual virginity would not be a dogma, since it has not been solemnly defined, but is infallibly taught by the Universal Magisterium.

I use the term dogma to include A., B., and C., which would place Mary’s perpetual virginity as well as other teachings about Mary in the realm of dogma.

Mary’s perpetual virginity
Mary’s Perpetual Sinlessness
Mary as Spouse of the Holy Spirit
Mary’s participation in the sufferings of Christ
Mary as Mother of the Church
Mary’s Queenship in Heaven
