Has Pope Francis changed the Catechism of the Catholic Church?

Some of his recent statements have made me question the value of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I am worried that he is trying to downplay doctrine to the point of irrelevance.

Has he ever upheld the CCC from attacks?

Please enlighten me.

First of all, don’t get you information about the pope’s statements from the mainstream media. They are notorious for misquoting, quoting out of context, and conflating statements in order to gain ratings and circulation.

Secondly, no, Pope Francis has said nothing that contradicts or changes the CCC. Plain and simple.

The pope hasn’t said anything that isn’t straight from the Catechism and the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas. The media has celebrated up and down that he said the Church doesn’t condemn homosexuals – but that’s what the Catechism says too. The media has beamed with pride because he said we shouldn’t preach the gospel by focusing on the Church’s moral rules – but that’s what St. Thomas Aquinas said too. All of what Pope Francis has been saying and doing comes from traditional Catholic catechetical methods. He has said more than once that he is only teaching what the Catechism teaches and that he firmly stands by the Church’s moral teachings. And he has acted on that, must recently by excommunicating a priest who defended same-sex “marriage.” The media just doesn’t “get” this saintly man, who is doing wonders by proclaiming ancient teachings of the Church.

The Pope cannot change Catholic Doctrine. What the Catechism teaches is and always be Catholic Doctrine.

Don’t pay any attention to all the stuff you hear about the Pope. Every Pope has his own style. Francis likes to spread love for Christ first, then the hard stuff - that’s all.

No, and he is not downplaying anything. In fact, his doctrine is quite strong - stick to www.vatican.va and to www.news.va and read through his homilies and declarations carefully. He is in the frontline of the Church Militant, is not afraid to preach Christ Crucified, and keeps warning us that our enemies are not flesh and blood, but the devil and his fallen companions.

Do not forget that the Holy Father is Pontifex Maximus - “the Supreme Pontiff”, a term that means “bridge-builder”. When something he says does not appeal to you, be sure it appeals to someone, and it draws him or her to the motherly heart of the Church.

For us, we must learn thoroughly what the Catechism brings together, and “hold on to the tradition as we have received it, either in writing or by word of mouth”. Don’t worry about the rest: to the bishop of the Holy See, Vicarius Christi, is given a special charism so that his faith may not fail.

No.

Why? Which statements? Can you elaborate?
I am worried that he is trying to downplay doctrine to the point of irrelevance.
Examples please.
Has he ever upheld the CCC from attacks?
Who is attacking it? When and where?

He referenced the Catechism for a positive assessment of homosexuality in his press conference on the way back from Brazil, if memory serves me right.

He has not said anything that contradicts Church teaching and he referred to the CCC for all to see what the Church actually teaches.
Don’t be misled by the sensationalist media and non-Catholics who are out to make mischief.

he can’t change it but he can further clarify Catholic Doctrine which sometimes looks to many people like a change.

Pope Francis is professing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and reminding us (and all Christians) that Gospel is not just confined to the written pages of the Bible. The Gospel is the living word of Christ, and we are all called to take it out into the world around us; to love our neighbor and to show that love by our actions and not just our words.
