Help with the origin of the name "Jesus"

I am dealing with someone who recently claimed that the name “Jesus” was derived from the name of some Roman goddess and I am looking for factual information on the origin of the English derivation of His Hebrew name - Yeshua. This person claims that if a person wants to be an authentic Christian, they need to be using more original terminology and that anyone praying to Jesus is actually praying to a Roman goddess. I’m not sure where he got this nonsense, but I need a factual response.

Okay, well, you should probably tell your friend that a lot of our traditions are from some pagan holidays so, it’s not like the name of Jesus is the only new thing. I mean, Easter is ripped from a pagan holiday celebrating spring–The Rebirth of the Sun, I believe. Get it? Resurrection? Christmas is also a winter kind of pagan holiday. In fact, Constantine only converted to Christianity so he could unite the empire, and he was baptized on his deathbed. The Catholic Church infused a lot of pagan traditions to assuage the transition and to give the religion a wider appeal.

Oh please- not this nonsense again- Passover was based on a pagan festival of theherding variety- feast of the unleacened bread based on those naughty pagan agricutural variety. And just because something is similiar(I believe your searching for SOl Invictus)does’nt mean it’s the same.Hate to tell you lot’s of stuff comes from the ancient pagans,names of months, days- are we supposed to throw it all out because it is"tainted" by those terrible 🙂 pagans. Oh -I also forgot, Philosophy, mathematics, history, science, architecture etc.If we threw that all out because of the"taint" we’d be in sad shape indeed.:cool: Also Temple sacrifices- got from their neighbors- the Canaanites

I know your opening question has been answered, but don’t fall for this trap. Before you are obliged to give a factual response, you need to have a factual accusation, not just hearsay. I would have asked my friend to provide proof of this bald-faced lie before I even lifted a finger to refute it.

Yeah, I’m not trying to start an argument. All I’m saying is that if Jesus’ name was taken from a Roman goddess, it’s no big whoop, considering a lot of other stuff was, too.
