well, since lots of people ask about bands they like and if they are bad or not to hear i want to ask about some I like:

The automatic: the Steve McQueen song is the one i know of them.
Iron Maiden
Kiss.
The rolling Stones.
Metallica.

I like putting music videos on youtube while working or doing something else, so i would like to know your opinions on this bands.

I like Metallica and Rolling Stones.

I also like heavy death metal. I dont know why really, but for some reason I do. This usually surprises people lol I dont listen to it often, but when I do I find myself enjoying it. I especially like Five Finger Death Punch.

I’m curious about others opinions too.

I wouldn’t listen to them, only because I’m not a fan of the music. I’ve tried listening to Metallica in the past, and I just couldn’t take it. I think it’s up to your ears, and your ears alone. Who am I to judge what listen anyone listens to? We all have different tastes, and I am glad we do, or else we’d all be boring. My music choices could be better, as my Mom would much rather me blare Michael Buble’s music at night rather than Chris Young’s! 😃 But, like I said, you should listen to whatever your ears want to hear!

My favorite band…Metallica. There is a lot of depth and truth in their lyrics.

Never heard of “The Automatic”.

Iron Maiden are absolutely fine - most of their songs are epic narratives with elements drawn from history, literature and fantasy. They’ve written some pretty good songs with a religious theme, such as “For the Greater Good of God” (which is about violence in the name of religion).

Kiss have a lot of songs with blatantly sexual themes, so approach with caution.

The Rolling Stones, ditto. Plus their song “Sweet Neo Con” is likely to get many people’s goats.

Metallica - blargh. Had me until 1991, but once they put Andres Serrano on their album covers, I’ve tended to ignore them. 😃

Some of them (I’m thinking “Until It Sleeps”, “And Justice For All”, “One”, etc.) But they’ve also given us immortal classics like:

“I’m madly in anger with you!”
“Fran-tic tic tic tic toc toc toc toc…”
“Fall down on your knees to the PHANTOM LORD!!”
“So come on, jump in the fire!”
“We will never stop, because we are Metallica!”
“Will you be there cause I’m the one who waits for you, or are you Unforgiven II?”

So…yeah. 😃

Well…I think I once saw “Iron Maiden”…and thought, “What’s that?” I looked up the definition of an"iron maiden" and thought I’d rather not deal with anything else related to that group from that point on. I feel ill just thinking of it, I kid you not!

Though, I’m sensitive. I hate torture scenes in movies and have felt nauseous from them, have walked out on movies for less!

I’ve seen “Kiss” and its pictures, and I didn’t like that with the tongue and all.

Can you imagine ANY of the saints listening to this music?

I could imagine Satan listening before I could imagine a saint listening to this!

One piece of advice with music and bands and other things in life. If you are even asking yourself the question…“Is this music okay? good?” If you feel it necessary to come on the forum to even ask, the answer is probably “no”!

What did Christ advise? He said to enter through the NARROW door.

That’s pretty much exactly what I was going to say. 👍

Metallica – like Samson – lost their power when they cut their hair. 😛 In all honesty, I’m not that familiar with their more recent stuff. I never got much into their older stuff, either, but I can appreciate it.

Iron Maiden often gets lumped into the category of “evil” bands because of their somewhat disturbing looking mascot. But if you look at their lyrics, that’s not the case.

“Five Finger Death Punch”? :ehh: I’ve never heard of them, but what a great name for a death metal band. 😛

Very true on Iron Maiden. They tend to get dismissed as borderline Satanic because of Eddie, “The Number of the Beast” (which is a song about a nightmare, not a “Hail Satan” song), and the general stigma that attaches to heavy metal in some circles. However, a lot of their songs are extremely literate - “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and “Brave New World” are just two minor examples. 🙂

FFDP was too over-polished and commercial for me. I used to be into death metal like Cannibal Corpse and Aborted – but of course I don’t listen to that genre anymore.

Isn’t “2 Minutes to Midnight” a song against abortion?

These are my exact thoughts, too! 👍

lol I don’t care about stuff like that If I like it I like it : )

It certainly sounds like that, but it’s actually about the concept of the Doomsday Clock (a virtual measure to show how close the world is to nuclear war.) “Midnight” is an actual nuclear war / holocaust. “2 minutes to midnight” means that the war is imminent and about to take place. The song is about nuclear war and the devastation it causes.

If these lyrics are a sample…it doesn’t sound like something a good Catholic should be listening to or promoting.

“I’m madly in anger with you”? Is that the opposite of being “in love”?

“Fall down on your knees to the phantom lord?”

“…jump in the fire!”…what fire? Hell?

Bow to the “phantom lord”? Who would that be, Satan?

“…unforgiven”?

Gosh!

I see nothing remotely redeemable about the names of these bands, their lyrics, or their pictures.

When they are in hell, they will regret doing all this and for taking so many other souls with them!

This all looks like the work of a demon!

The only time we should ever bend our knee is to Our Lord or Our Lady, or in veneration of a saint or angel…not a phantom who declares himself “lord”! There is no other Lord but God!

This is idolatry!

Do you believe in the saints?

Have you ever heard of St. John Bosco? He once had a vision of hell. In it, he was told 3 things get us into hell. These were bad books (now could also include videogames, movies, songs, magazines), bad friends, and bad habits.

If the just man will barely make it into heaven, what will happen to these very serious sinners who are telling people to “bow” to something that isn’t God.

I believe ALL these folks will end up on a VERY low level in hell if they don’t turn their lives around very soon.

Hell is quite horrendous. Visionaries say they would have died from fright had they not been strengthened. The fires are much more intense than fire on earth. Further, our bodies don’t lose their ability to feel…like we would here when our nerves are fried.

Further, saints have told us it’s unbearable. St. Padre Pio said the difference between, say, purgatory and a fire here would be like the difference between regular water and boiling water.

Our Lady of Fatima has tried to warn us. Our Lady of Good Success…Our Lady of Lourdes…Our Lady of Salette.

We are approaching some terrible times. We need to be very good now and not dabble in anything evil, even remotely so. We need to be ready, because we don’t know the day or hour.

If you all truly loved Our Lord or Our Lady, you would stop this all right now. Stop telling people to bow to the devil. Why not, instead, do something wholesome, pure, and holy that will get you into heaven?

When you come on the forum asking if these songs, and groups, are okay…you, in your hearts, already know the answer to that question.

Further, why would you do something that is even doubtful? Why risk it? I feel it’s a little like one of my students asking…“Hey, can I pass with a D?”

Maybe…but why not at least try for a “A”?

I think it’s more a reference to the singer’s well-documented issues with alcohol and anger management.
“Fall down on your knees to the phantom lord?”
Bow to the “phantom lord”? Who would that be, Satan?
The lyrics are unclear, and seem to refer to war (or perhaps a pagan god).
“…jump in the fire!”…what fire? Hell?
Right you are, the song is written from the point of view of Old Scratch who watches us “jump in the fire”. Not very cheerful, but I don’t think it was meant to be.
“…unforgiven”?
I think the song is about a loner who almost finds meaning through a relationship, but it doesn’t work out.

Metallica’s lyrics aren’t exactly edifying material, but I don’t think they’re as bad as you might think. 🙂

I personally think the worst of the lot is “Fran-tick-tick-tick-tock-tock-tock.” It sounds cute coming from a 5-year old, but not a bunch of grown-up metal heads.

James Hetfield, who wrote these lyrics, had a difficult life: his parents were Christian Scientists, and his mother died of cancer because they refused medical treatment. He’s had trouble with alcohol, but has overcome it. He also has a bunch of Christian tattoos, is a member of the NRA, and wrote “Don’t Tread on Me” (a song defending US foreign policy). He appears to be a complex human being (like most of us) rather than a stereotypical “Satanist”. So…yeah. 😃
