Bear with me because this long.

My mother and I were recently talking about contraception. She is Catholic but does not accept the Church’s teaching on contraception. I was telling her that contraception is a moral evil and that all forms of contraception, by their very nature and purpose, basically tell God that we know better than Him (meaning that we know how many kids we can handle) and that we should be allowed to have sex whenever. I then told her that according to (I think) 1 Peter, all life comes from God and that He knew us before we were in the womb.

She then made four (bad) points:
  1. Many people have financial problems that prevent them from being able to take care of children so birth control allows them to have sex and be unitive without having children.
  2. If God didn’t want people to have sex just for the pleasure, He wouldn’t have made it feel so good.
  3. If all life comes from God, why would He allow children to be raised in bad homes that, not only hurt them physically, but spiritually as well. (She also made a second point that if the abusive parents used contraception, they most likely would not get children, not be able to abuse more kids, and, therefore, contraception is a good thing.
  4. If it is evil to be against the procreative side of sex, why does the Church allow Natural Family Planning. It is just another form of contraception that is meant to prevent children from coming into the picture.
I really am worried about my mother because I do love her and do not wish the separation from God that occurs when people put themselves and their pleasures above God. 😦 How can I help my stubborn mother understand that it is evil?

As a side note, I apologize if that whole thing didn’t come out as clear as it does in my head (and if it doesn’t I will do my best to rephrase it). Also, please be quite frank with me, seeing as putting things nicely doesn’t really ever help, and refrain from pointing out prayer (I already am praying for my mother and appreciate the prayers of others).

I’d say yuou need to stress the importance of God before pleasure.

Being frank, your mother didn’t come to this opinion on her own. If she’s odl enough to be the mother of a “young Catholic” writing on this forum, then she very probaby grew up with clergy who helped de-form her conscience. (Possibly your dadwas involved in this too.) If you want your mom to change her opinion, I highly suggest** you pray that the priest (or priests) at her parish have the courage to boldly preach the Church teachings with love. **You’re the offspring; they’re the fathers. Pray and fast. Hopefully, she will meet a wonderful priest with courage in the Confessional.

In the meantime, witness to her through your life.
