I am a returning Catholic and most of my family are non-practicing catholics.
My parent’s and I have been helping my grandma renovate her apartment (she is 78 years old) on Saturday’s for the past couple of weeks. My dad, however, is expressing interest in extending this work into Sunday now that some big tasks are starting to pile up. I have expressed to him that a home reno may be considered “servile” work and that this could be sinful to do on a Sunday. While he doesn’t expect me to help on Sunday’s, I can pretty much guarantee that he will be working with or without me and I think that he could use my help.
My questions are this:

- Does the fact that I am volunteering my services for another person negate the fact that I am carrying out servile work (ie. work that you would normally pay somebody to do)? Would this be permissable on a Sunday?
- Would it be un-charitable for me to refuse to help my family on Sunday because I believe that it conflicts with the fifth commandment?
