Helping guide my child to confirmation

My 18 year old daughter is contemplating making her confirmation. During her early teenage year she went through a crisis of faith like so many young people. She was drawn back to God through a Baptist church but found them lacking. She goes to church with me every week but she is having a hard time fully commiting to the Catholic faith. We speak often of the Lord and our faith at home, pray regularly together and I know she loves the God deeply. How can I show her that getting confirmed is entering into a whole new relationship with God and not just one more thing she needs to do. She is overwhelmed right now with preparing for college and getting her 1st job, she doesn’t see confirmation as a benefit right now. Any suggestions on how to open her eyes?
 
great job so far! Sounds like you have a great bond. I would suggest this, as a father and as an educator. Confirmation is about living our faith in service to others, or faith in action. is there a way she can get involved with a parish ministry? Youth group advisor, lector, assistant CCD teacher, food pantry, etc. In terms of college, many campuses have active Catholic student programs, and I would investigate this as well to see if she can make a connection before starting at the college. Explain to her the gifts of the holy spirit given at confirmation. And the peace that comes with getting “right with god”.

Tell her that the Holy Spirit will be with her in a much more active role. It’s His task to guide us in our spiritual formation. We need all the help we can get. She will be pleasantly surprised when she discovers how the Holy Spirit answers prayers for help. She will need His guidance in all of her courses. Say a quick prayer before a test, and relax.

I’ve experienced the aid of the Holy Spirit as a teacher many times. There were difficult questions asked, and I would answer, but ask myself where that came from. Once I answered a difficult question, and the words came from my mouth, but I was listening to them along with the students. I knew that answer didn’t originate in my brain. The Holy Spirit is wonderful. To pass up His friendship and help would be foolish. Why would you?
 
Pray, pray, and pray some more.

For those of you “listening in” that have younger children, never let up on raising them in the Church. It is too easy for kids/people in our world today to get distracted by everything else.
