My United Methodist friend has invited me to join him on his church’s youth work trip. I am thinking of accepting his offer, although I would like to know how permissible this is. As a Catholic, may I assist in their endeavor? I would not be missing Mass because of this, and I would make sure to refrain from recieving their communion if it was offered (I will likely be attending a Methodist worship service or two during the trip). If you need more information, please ask. I will be happy to provide it.
 
There is nothing wrong with doing charitable works together with people of other faiths.

Just make sure it’s not a pro-abortion charitable activity. I’m serious.

Read the UMC Statement of Faith.
 
They wo9uld be doing a morraly acceptable act of charity --correct. Why would be bad? You have no problem accepting this person as your friend why not do acts of charity together. Last time I checked weren’t persons in the UMC christian?

What exactly does “conflicts of life with life” mean?

Yes, their stance is clearly stated in their book of dicipline. Section 156.K states “we recognize tragic conflicts of life with life that may justify abortion, and in such cases we support the legal option of abortion under proper medical procedures”

ALSO:
The United Methodist position in favor of abortion has been so strong that two of its institutions helped organize and affiliate with the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights. For many years RCAR used office space in the United Methodist Building which is located across the street from the U.S. Supreme Court. In both 1996 and 1997 the United Methodist Church publicly supported President Clinton’s veto of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act.

The work will probably be a lot of building of houses or repairing buildings (we’re going to the New Orleans area), so I highly doubt that abortion would be involved at all.

I suppose I should have been clearer in my first post. My main concern is that I may be somehow ‘promoting’ Methodism by going on the trip, as opposed to Catholicism.
 
I see nothing in what you would be doing that would be “promoting” Methodism over Catholicism.

It is certainly situational. A group going to Mexico to evangelize is not the same as a group going somewhere to build houses.

I don’t think this particular trip would be an inappropriate exercise of ecumenism.

If you are really in doubt, talk to your priest.
 
The slogan of the UMC is Open Minds, Open Hearts, Open Doors.

So ask them if they are open to your leading a Rosary everyday.

See, you entitled this thread "Helping Methodists, but in actuality what you are going to do is help God’'s people with the Methodists. So go.🙂
 
Alright, great! I was seriously concerned about somhow promoting heresy via this trip, but I guess I won’t be. Which is great!

However, now I realize that some of the my info in the first post wasn’t true. Apparantly, if I go on this trip, I will be unable to attend two Sunday Masses. Is there some way to obtain a dispensation for these two, and if so… would it be acceptable to be dispensed for the reason of attending this trip?

Just explain the trip to your pastor and ask him for a dispensation.

You need to ask your pastor this, and see if he will dispense you.

The trip starts on a Saturday morning, and ends the next Monday morning. I highly doubt that Methodists have a Catholic Mass scheduled at the appropriate times…:o
