Here’s your chance to say some thing nice about Catholics

One of the things with which all Christians can identify is being insulted. And insults do hurt. The notion that “sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you,’ isn’t true. Yet even though Christians know this we sometimes take the time to insult each other. And that’s not pleasing to the Lord, right?

This is a Catholic site and the people who visit it whether to make a contribution or simply to browse would be unable to do so had it not been for Catholics who brought it into being. It seems to me, then, that anybody who visits this site and enjoys participating or perusing has at least one good reason to feel gratitude toward Catholics.

If the existence of this site were the only reason for people to feel favorably disposed toward Catholics something would be seriously wrong. But the truth of the matter is there are lots of other reasons for people to view Catholics in a good light. I’d like to read some of those reasons. Perhaps you know a caring and compassionate Catholic? Perhaps a Catholic has helped you? Perhaps you’ve seen a Catholic respond to abuse with kindness? Perhaps you’ve exchanged news and views with a Catholic on this site who has represented his or her faith in a way that engaged and comforted you?

So please tell your story. I don’t mind whether or not you’re a Catholic because you won’t be writing about yourself. Nor do I mind if you tell of a personal encounter that inclined you to think well of Catholics or if you tell of something you merely heard or read about that caused you to pause and silently reflect that perhaps Catholics weren’t all bad. I just ask that the story you relate is true, which means no exaggeration.

I’m looking forward to being encouraged by the comments that will be posted on this thread. The writer of Hebrews directs us to encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of us may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. The insults wear us down. But when we become encouragers we build each other up.

Perhaps you’ll be encouraging enough to push this thread up to 1,000 posts by Saint Valentine’s Day?

Catholics are Christian!

Why don’t we expact on charity and say something nice about everyone?

Muslims are excellent at recitation and at almsgiving.
Mormons are great at preaching and going door to door.
Jews are very thoughtful and their rabbis are sages.
Atheists can make great teachers, scientists, and leaders.
Buddhists are excellent at meditation and exampling peace.
Protestants are great at respecting and honoring their preachers.
Orthodox are very holy and they really love to honor icons.
Wiccans are very caring and they follow a variant of the golden rule.
And may all God’s children enter into the Kingdom of God!

I admit, my knowledge of other religions is limited, but we can learn something good from each other, however we may percieve one another, for no one is so evil that he cannot do any good.

Catholics set an example in charity, caring for the least of God’s children.

Apparently I have some distance to go in my understanding of Catholic Answers Forums culture. I’d have thought Catholics posting on their own website would have jumped at the chance to say something positive about their fellow believers or to tell a story portraying a Catholic who showed kindness and compassion. Still, we’re currently only 994 posts short of the number I’d envisioned and there is the rest of day.

I do have a story myself.

I was born in London and grew up there. When I was seven years old our family moved from North London to East London (where you can meet a better class of cockney, so some say). We made friends with our neighbors, one of which was an elderly Catholic man. I don’t know if he was a widower but he lived alone, just around the corner from us. He always had a friendly greeting whenever he saw any of us out and about and Mum and Dad both liked him.

One day he offered to take two of us (me and the elder of my two younger sisters) out for a day at the seaside. Mum said it would be OK and when the prearranged day arrived we were both very excited. He took us on the train out to Southend. I remember going on rides, eating at a café and walking down the pier eating candy floss (what the English call cotton candy) and how he smiled a lot as he watched us having fun. We had an absolutely wonderful time (as evidenced by the fact that we both fell asleep on the train on the way home). I can’t recall his name but I know he did what he did just to be kind. And I daresay he (correctly) guessed that we weren’t what you’d call well off so for my parents to lay on such a magnificent treat was simply out of the question. May his memory be eternal.
