My sister in law was baptized Catholic, but has now turned from the Church. She refused to have her child baptized, states she will take birth control for the rest of her life and start her daughter on birth control when she becomes a teenager, encourages her husband to have a vasectomy, says her body is hers alone, ect. ect. ect.
She is a very confused woman, but a lot of it has to do with her husband who doesn’t believe anything. What are we to do? We have to see them, they are family.
The last time they came to our home they broke the second commandment every other word.
My wife tried talking to her sister tonight about birth control and the authority of the Church, but she rejects all of it as falsehoods. Her mind is warped with the ways of the world and she can’t see the truth.
What would you? Pray for her obviously which we do. Her name is taken to the alter on Sunday. How would you all deal with this situation?

Unfortunately, we just accept that others even family members do not believe in following the church. I would say "we obviously disagree so let’s talk about something else.

You have the right to your opion
You have the right to say 'I am educating my kids in the Catholic faith and I don’t want you to say anything to the contrary to them.

You DO NOT have the right to tell her how to live

I agree, I don’t have the right to tell her how to live. However, the Church does have the right and the authority to tell her how to live. I am also responsible if I don’t educate her on these issues.

It sounds like your sister knows what the church teaches and still refuses it. Not much you can do for them but pray, offer your own actions as a good witness to the Christian life, and speak up if asked your opinion.

You can also refuse to have them in your home if they can’t watch their mouths. Your home, your rules.

when the student is ready, the teacher appears. you cannot make the student ready. but through your good example and prayer/prayer/prayer the Holy Spirit can make the student ready. prudence is necessary. like saint francis instructed: preach the Gospel. use words when necessary.

instructing the ignorant is a spiritual work of mercy for which we’re responsible. good example is the best instruction

admonishing the sinner is also another work of mercy for which we are responsible. your wife has done that. she is NOT responsible to make her sister assent. “please dont use God’s name in vain in my home,” is a reasonable request and a gentle admonishon.

I would continue to pray very much for your sister because I know that is what will bring her back. God will put situations in her life and leadings in her life that will bring her home. I know this because I left the Church myself for a while and all the talk and pushing didn’t help, but as I have returned to the church now I can look back at my life and see how each little thing, each little incident was a step God used to bring me home. It may happen quick and it may take years but continue to pray the rosary, and novenas and God will work in her life and her husbands, too.

As far as the language, you may have to ask her when in your house to not take the Lord’s name in vain. That is easier said than done, I know. It would be hard for me.

She sounds very confused. I will pray for her, too.

I agree with the others who have said that you are not responsible for your sister’s choices, other than to pray and set a good example.

I do think you are obliged to do something about what she says in your home, though. What I do when I hear the name of God taken in vain is to wince, pause, and withdraw somewhat from the conversation, to show that to me those few words are more significant that the others. If someone in my home were to obstinately ignore my polite signals, and continue with the blasphemy, or increase it, then I would firmly object, to the point of saying that you are not welcome in the house if you will not change.

I keep a crucifix very visible in the main living areas. It shows where I stand, and what I believe in, and no guest can innocently ignore the values of my home.
