Herpes an impediment for marriage?

Please do both of the suggestions you’ve been given. Go to the doctor. Go to your Priest.
My opinion from what I have read about herpes being an impediment is that it is probably not. From what I understand AIDS or HIV is not .

Praying you sort this out soon and ease your mind.

You might want to ask if your medical condition might constitute an impediment to the marriage under Canon Law. I think a valid sacramental marriage requires one to consumate the marriage sexually, and this might be a problem with your condition. You should discuss this with your priest as soon as possible.
I hate to step into this but your reply is exactly what this thread is titled and what the OP is asking about

Good news, I went to the Doctor, I do not have any STD, what I had was another problem easily curable by a cream and not contagious.

I also told my girlfriend about the little scare I had and we are both laughing about it now.

Praise God!

I’m glad to hear your news! Hope everything works out for you. 🙂

It seems I do, and OP, I offer my sincerest apologies for reading you the riot act over it.

Now go get checked and tell her – wrong as I was about the nature of the relationship, this is still something that should come out up front. Good luck! 🙂
It’s an easy assumption to make. My brother-in-law fell for a Russian girl online, exchanged letters, and sent her money to come over her, etc,
Long story shorter… She didn’t exist, it was a scam and he was ripped off for a couple thousand dollars. OK, so my bil is gullible…

anyway, good that you saw the doctor. Better to be stressed out over telling your future wife about a condition you have than about one you think you might have.

My husband has genital herpes and I do not. Neither of us knew until after we got married. Although it was somewhat upsetting to get the news, we remain happily married. I was lucky enough not to have contracted the virus, and I am currently working on convincing my husband that we should not be using condoms. His main concern is protecting me from contracting the virus while my main concern is acting in accordance with God’s plan for marriage. I am also concerned about the possibility of contracting it and spreading it to children during pregnancy. I’m not pregnant now, but I hope to be soon. I have heard that it is possible to use a condom and cut off the tip as a way of significantly reducing the chances of spreading the virus while not interfering with the possibility of conception. Does anybody know if this practice goes against church teachings?

Ma’am,

I’m no expert, but I think that cutting off the tip of the condum will GREATLY ENHANCE the chances of getting the disease!

Please, please, please consult a doctor before you even THINK about doing that!

I would tend to think for any lurker who may have the same question: that the question of having any disease per se would or would not be an impediment to a sacramental marriage (unless it was the material cause for impotence or was something like AIDS, which would mean you couldn’t have intercourse without endangering your own life, which would cause an impediment).

The bigger issue here is whether anyone would withhold such information from someone. That may well be an impediment. If a woman or man wouldn’t marry a spouse who had some kind of communicable disease, and that information was withheld, then they would have married under false pretenses and that could be a serious impediment to a free decision which is necessary for a vow to be valid. If their decision was made because they didn’t know about something they could have known about and didn’t because of a lie, that affects whether real consent was given.

Anyway, is this an impediment to marriage?
If you wouldn’t be able to participate in the marital act, which is meant for the procreation of children, then it might be an impediment to marriage. You may want to speak to a priest about this, if the friendship/relationship were to progress that far.
Secondly, how should I bring this up and when is the best time to bring it up to her?
I think you need to bring this up at some point. When you think you’d like to know this if you were in her shoes, it’s time to tell her; otherwise, you’d wouldn’t be 100% truthful to her, and I’d like to think that a girl you’re thinking of courting deserves at least that much.

God bless you.
