Hello welcome - This will help

EWTN presents the teachings of the Catholic Church in an easy-to-use format
ewtn.com/faith/teachings/teaching.htm

This is a short doctrinal concordance of the Catholic faith. It is not a complete concordance. The purpose is to give people interested in Catholicism a quick reference for the most common items of the faith. Particularly in areas where Catholics and other religions disagree

The first thing you should know is that Catholics are Christians and we love Jesus too.

There are some crazy things people say about Catholics so if you want to learn about Catholicism just ask away we are not scared of questions.
Just what we do here on the forums is if you have a question just make a new thread so we answer you clearly on each question.

Asking 10 questions at a time just makes a mess.

And many of us are people who have recently become Catholic or came back to the Catholic Church so excuse some of our eagerness to share we sometimes get a little excited about the Church.

God Bless
Scylla

(one more thing, don’t trust Jim he is in the Diocese of San Bernardino and they are kinda out there.) Hey Jim how are you doing?

The first thing, is in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth and all that is in the earth…the word catholic means “universal”. As a Catholic under Rome we are in full communion with the universal church that God established.

I’m happy you joined the forum and I pray that you grow closer to Christ as a result of it 👍

God bless you!

Welcome, Teena! I agree with the other posters…welcome, and please know first and foremost that we are Christian and try to evangelize by example, living the faith and being good Christians. Welcome to the forums, and I pray that you find answers you may seek and fellowship as well!

That would be that the Catholic Church is the oldest Christian church, established 2,000 years ago by Jesus Christ.

The Church believes all things in the bible as the bible came from the Church and has been protected by the Church for 2,000 years.

When Jesus established the Catholic Church he wanted it to exist until the end of the world as he commanded the Apostles to teach all nations. This teaching is still going on. He promised the guidance of the Holy Spirit so it could not teach falsely.

All this and more can be found on the links supplied above. I also recommend Catholic Answers. Try a search for anything you’d like.

First you should understand that Catholics are the original Christians, and that for the first 1000 years of Christianity ALL Christians were Catholic. Catholics compiled the bible and protected it, defended it and copied it by hand for about 1500 years until the printing press was invented.

You, as a non-Catholic Christian are technically a Protestant. People here may refer to you that way. Don’t be offended by that label, we are just trying to understand where everyone is coming from so we can have a place to begin a conversation.

God love you,
Paul

Teena,

the first thing you should know is that we are happy to have you here.

As has already been stated, we are not shy about answering questions, so please do not be shy about asking them.

As another poster has already pointed out, Catholics believe themselves to be the “original” Christians. We believe that the Doctrines of the Catholic Church (which coincidentally, includes 13 (?) Churches outside of the Roman Catholic Church) are the teachings of Jesus as they were handed directly from Him to the Apostles, and have remained unchanged since they were first taught by Jesus through Apostolic Succession.

God bless…

The first thing you should know is that it is likely that about 90% of what you have been told about Catholicism is either distorted or just plain wrong. So be prepared to shed a lot of misconceptions. 🙂

Please let me embellish on what a previous ‘poster’ wrote when he wrote the Catholic church is the one Jesus Christ founded 2000 years ago.
As a former jehovah’s Witness, then an ‘enlightened intellectual’ I have heard all the arguments against Matthew 16 where he made St. Peter the first Pope.
It was the Holy Spirit (and Our Father, of course) who allowed St. Peter to see that Jesus was indeed God.
Again I have heard all the arguments of how when he declared Simon Bar-Jonah to be the Rock, the Greek was mistraslated to mean ‘pebble’ and it was the feminine… yadda yadda yadda.
It is far more likely they were speaking in Aramaic and the word… (I think it’s Chaiphas, but that’s not the important point) cannot be mistranslated to fit Protestant hysteria to oppose the Church He founded.
I am grossly oversimplifying something deeply profound, and for that I apologize, but the basic point is true.
Please let me welcome you to this forum and Deo Gratia for your being here.
Sincerely,

WretchedSinner

I am a christian
Hello teena welcome to Catholic Answers.

First thing you should know is that we are Christian too. Don’t know if you knew this or not, you would be suprised how many people don’t think we are Christian.

Hope you stick around so you can learn all about our great faith. If you ever need anything, or have any question feel free to PM.

God bless

… What is the first thing I should know?
Hi teena01,

I would suggest these are the first things to know…

i) We believe Christ founded the church and gave absolute authority to St Peter
ii) We believe the Pope is a successor to St Peter, and has inherited that absolute authority
iii) We believe the Holy Spirit protects the Pope from teaching an error as truth (Papal Infallibility)

I guess this is what separates us from other Christians.

If you don’t belive in the above, then there is no point in being a member of the Catholic Church.

But when you do embrace the Catholic Church, you find many wonderful surprises. My favourite is learning about our Sainthood. They are fascinating people from all over the world who are ultimate witnesses to the Catholic faith.

Welcome, Teena! You are my sister in Christ. I just want you to know the those of us who are Catholic are Christian. And we pray for all of our brothers and sisters in Christ, Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox.
