Hi i have a question, My friend is roman orthodox and he doesn’t believe we have to confess to a priest to receive communion, he believes he only confesses to god like “protestants” because he says “theres no where in the bible, does it say we have to and Jesus never said so”. He only follows the bible, I was wondering is there a verse or anything i can tell or show him to change his mind ? He even started to get me to wonder. I would appreciate all your answers thank you very much god bless.

Here is a quick answer:

James 5:16 - James clearly teaches us that we must “confess our sins to one another,” not just privately to God. James 5:16 must be read in the context of James 5:14-15, which is referring to the healing power (both physical and spiritual) of the priests of the Church. Hence, when James says “therefore” in verse 16, he must be referring to the men he was writing about in verses 14 and 15 – these men are the ordained priests of the Church, to whom we must confess our sins.

Keep in mind if the Roman Orthodox Church has no sacrament of reconciliation at all, (I admit ignorance on this matter) then the issue is explaining the Catholic sacrament, not that your friend is obligated to confess sins to his priest.

[BIBLEDRB]John 20:21-23[/BIBLEDRB]

[BIBLEDRB]2 Corinthians 5:18-21[/BIBLEDRB]

[BIBLEDRB]Luke 10:16[/BIBLEDRB]

[BIBLEDRB]Matthew 16:19[/BIBLEDRB]

[BIBLEDRB]Matthew 28:18-20[/BIBLEDRB]

Also try this link cuf.org/FileDownloads/confess.pdf where i got these scripture verses

also:
[BIBLEDRB]Matthew 16:13-20[/BIBLEDRB]

also it is important to note that Jesus gave the Apostles (ie the first bishops) the ability to forgive or retain sin and apostolic succession gives their successors (the bishops) the ability to do the same. and the bishops give the priests that same ability.

If he believes that, then he is heterodox, not roman or any other kind of “orthodox”.

*1John 1:

If we say, “We are without sin,” we deceive ourselves, 3 and the truth is not in us.
9
If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing.
10
If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. *

The word acknowledge is also translated as confess in some versions. To acknowledge or confess is to make a public or oral statement. This is not the same as prayer.

What do you mean by “roman orthodox”? Catholic, or Orthodox? Or something else?
