Hidden God

the bible says that all those afraid of the light (i.e. are ashamed of their actions/sins), run from the light, and all those that are not afraid of the light run towards it (Him). forgive my poor paraphrasing ]

why then, is God a hidden God? what does God have to hide from? i just don’t get it.

Why do you believe He is hidden? I don’t.

I believe that you are referring to:

John 3:16-21 (New King James Version)

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For **God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. **
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

I don’t quite see how you come to the conclusion that God is hidden or hiding??Remember after Adam and Eve sinned…God came looking for them…but they hid from him.

Also, our free will is a big factor…see verses 17-18 above…if we choose to not believe then we are running away from the light (Christ…sent by the Father)…God respects our free will more than we do…he won’t make us submit to the light…we must choose to love him (God is a lover…not a rapist!). Also, be assured that everyone…and I do mean everyone…receives the necessary graces from his Holy Spirit to repent of their sins and believe the Good News of the Gospel…that the Kingdom of God is truely at hand!..and run to the light…but again, its our choice.

God is not hidden and He is not running away from us…God is running after us…chasing us his children! This is really the good news…but the really great news is that: HIS LOVE AND MERCY ENDURE FOREVER!..THANKS BE TO GOD…especially for us Christian Catholics who still and always will have the fullness of his gifts in the Church…specifically the Sacrament of Penance! Or said another way…God has made this decision (to run to the light…often via the Confession penalty box) a no brainier…even for someone like me!

don’t mean to be rude, but where is He then? please point Him out to me…

i have read a lot of older prayers and songs and many of them refer to God as being “behind the veil”, and also that He is hidden. why does He have to hide? what is the reason for it? what is the purpose?

i’m sorry, but i still don’t get it.

God hides himself from human eyes because the brightness of his radiant beauty is too great for us to take in and live. It’s why he sent his Son to be born of a woman, Mary, so that we could see the face of God in the face of another human being.

Jesus, since he ascended into heaven, is still present with us here–in the Blessed Sacrament. So, in a way, he is hidden from us under the appearance of bread and wine, but he is still with us, as he promised he would be.

God also hides himself in order to make us yearn for his presence. It’s his way of wooing us as the Beloved of our souls.

But, although God hides from us for his own purposes, he doesn’t do it out of shame for himself but to keep us from being ashamed in his presence.
