Dear Catholic Answers Forum,
Recently I’ve been inspired by Gustave Dore, an artist who did extensive Bible drawings, some of the best I’ve seen in fact. A company called Dover seems to publish most of his stuff, and The Dore Bible Illustrations is a wonderful book containing 241 Bible drawings, perhaps engravings is the more correct word. I specifically decided to study Dore after hankering for some outstanding Revelation artwork. The Dore Bible Illustrations contains six of them, and the back of the book says, that the Dover book contains “all 241 plates – long out of print-- which Dore executed for the Bible.” Yet recently I was Google image searching for Dore’s art, and, stumbled upon the following depiction of John’s vision of Christ on Patmos, which I’m quite convinced must be Dore’s. vermande.us/tim/bs_revgd01a.jpg.
The skill of it makes me feel like its Dore’s, but I’m merely an admirer of his and can’t claim to be an art expert. Why would Dover have excluded such an excellent piece? It isn’t in the above mentioned book. It makes me wonder if there are other “hidden manna,” which for some reason were excluded? I emailed Dover themselves and am waiting for their response.
