note that at the time John Kennedy was elected President there was a rumor that he intended to divide Massachusetts into two states along an east-west line.

The new states were to be High Mass and Low Mass. 😃

I thought that the terms ā€œhigh Massā€ and low Mass" applied only to the Tridentine rite; and that the new rite did not contain this distinction–but it can be celebrated with varying degrees of solemnity.

You are correct.

Psalm45:9:
The Tridentine High Mass is the most beautiful thing on this side of Heaven. The Choir sings throughout the majority of it, only stopping for the readings, sermon, and Eucharistic Prayers. The Priest and the Altar Boys Chant, the Priest even chants the Epistle and Gospel readings. I think the icing is seeing all six of the tall candles lit on that magnificent marble altar. The flickering illumination adds to the mystery as light passes through the rising incense of the censur. šŸ™‚
I agree, when I attend, I feel my soul lifts in adoration to GOD, and the sole focus is GOD, not just the person in back or next to you in Mass.

There is an indult mass in Littleton CO and I think they have a high mass weekly, and there is Holy Ghost parish in downtown Denver that has an exellent Latin Novus Ordo mass.

Before they offered the TLM in Colorado Springs we used to drive to Denver - and take in a game sometimes at Coors field afterwards in the summertime:)

In my childhood High Mass was the one with the choir, dozens of altar boys, lots of incense, and if you were really lucky, a couple of ladies fainting on summer mornings. The low Mass was the one your dad hustled you to when you were leaving for vacation, going to the ball game or had something else important to do. Or maybe he couldn’t go without a cigaret for the time it took for the longer Mass. I think those distinctions went out with the revisions of the Roman Missal after V2. Nowadays, a high Mass is one so loaded with liturgical abuses, performing priests, dancing nuns that your blood pressure soars. A low Mass is one that doesn’t cause you to mutter disgustedly to your spouse more than once or twice, so you can still leave in a good mood.
